Geneve,Swiss -Jornal Strada -August 2012: -- The European Union intends to review the use of digital tachographs and adopt improvements in safety and efficacy in terms of profitability, which favors a reduction of operational and administrative charges for road
transport... The IRU is intended to ensure greater security, at a reasonable cost to prevent fraud in tachographs as well as better enforcement of sanctions , harder for violators of tachographs, stressing that combating fraud tachograph is essential to the sustainability of road transport services... The IRU is strongly opposed to the compulsory installation of all devices with positioning satellite once they cease to make tamper-proof digital tachograph... " A more complex and expensive technology will not stop the offenders, but there will be increasingly tougher sanctions", argued the Chairman of the Committee on Social Affairs of the IRU, Georges Causse...

Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -August 13, 2012: -- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Monday it will not delay new rules setting standards for automotive "black boxes" set to take effect on Sept. 1... In a notice posted Monday, NHTSA rejected a petition by the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers — the trade group representing Detroit's Big Three automakers, Toyota Motor Corp., Volkswagen AG and seven others — to delay the new requirements for event data recorders until September 2013... The "black boxes," officially called event data recorders or EDRs, collect data about the seconds leading up to a crash and can help investigators determine the cause... The new rules were finalized in August 2006, though implementing it has already been delayed by two years, the safety agency noted... The auto trade group said in order to comply, some automakers with older-generation EDRs may simply disable them in order to comply with new regulations that set standards but don't mandate the devices...Labels: rules and regulations, tachographs
