Washington,DC,USA -The Detroit News, by David Shepardson -May 22, 2012: -- Motorcycle deaths are an increasing concern among U.S. state highway safety officials as deaths may have hit 4,500 in 2011 — about the same as the year before — a study released Tuesday found... The Governors Highway Safety Association -GHSA- said a review of the first nine months of 2011 found motorcycle deaths fell 1.7 percent, the same amount that overall road deaths fell for all of 2011. Prior surveys have found that motorcycle deaths rise in the last three months of the year, so 2011 is likely to end without a decrease, GHSA said... GHSA calls on states to:
 — Increase helmet use, noting that NHTSA estimates that helmets saved 1,829 motorcyclists' lives in 2008 and another 822 motorcyclists who died that year would have survived had they worn helmets.
 — Reduce alcohol impairment.
— Reduce speeding.
— Provide motorcycle operator training to all who need or seek it.
— Encourage all drivers to share the road with motorcyclists.
