* Oregon - TransCore reports record spot market freight volumes available in April
Portland,ORE,USA -Truck News (CAN) -May 18, 2012: -- TransCore’s North American Freight Index indicated a record volume of spot market freight was available in April... The index reported April had the highest single month volume since the index was established in 1996. On a year-over-year basis, freight volumes were up 17% and April’s volumes were 3.5% greater than this March... The index is derived from TransCore’s network of load boards in the US and Canada...
* New Jersey - Truckload Capacity Flattening, Survey Shows
Newark,NJ,USA -The Journal of Commerce Online, by William B. Cassidy -May 22, 2012: -- Carrier data points to rough balance in first quarter as capacity drops less than 1 percent... Capacity at a group of seven large truckload carriers dropped 0.6 percent from a year ago in the first quarter and only 0.3 percent from the fourth quarter, the smallest annual and sequential quarterly decline in their tractor count in a year... The tractor count at those seven trucking companies has dropped only 1.7 percent since the end of 2009, but is now 15.9 percent lower than it was at its peak at the end of 2006... Trucking executives warn their freight-handling capacity could shrink more if economic growth picks up pace in the second and third quarters. That capacity is not only limited by the number of available tractors, but available drivers... A 17 percent surge in the TransCore DAT North AmericanFreight Index in April could indicate shippers are running up against the limits of capacity at large truckload fleets, said David Schrader, senior vice president at TransCore...

* DC - Got tanker? FMCSA new definition could require new endorsement

Some states may already be enforcing an expanded definition of “tank vehicle” that now applies to vehicles hauling an aggregate of 1,000 gallons in containers of 119 gallons or larger... The new guidance states: “The new definition is intended to cover (1) a vehicle transporting an IBC or other tank used for any liquid or gaseous materials, with an individual rated capacity of 1,000 gallons or more that is either permanently or temporarily attached to the vehicle or chassis; or (2) a vehicle used to transport multiple IBCs or other tanks having an individual rated capacity of more than 119 gallons and an aggregate rated capacity of 1,000 gallons or more that are permanently or temporarily attached to the vehicle or the chassis” ...
* Ontario - Apps Transport replaces a third of its fleet with new Peterbilts

It’s a significant investment for Apps, as the order represents about one-third of its entire fleet and the switch to a premium truck is somewhat uncommon for a city cartage fleet... Rob McDonald, president of Apps, told Trucknews.com the company was unhappy with how its EPA07 generation vehicles were performing and decided to start with a clean slate when transitioning to EPA2010 technology with selective catalytic reduction (SCR)...
