* Michigan - Gasoline-powered diesel-like engine could boost fuel economy by 50 percent 

(Photo, Delphi: Delphi's single cylinder Gasoline Direct Injection Compression Ignition) Troy,MICH,USA -Gizmag, by Darren Quick -May 20, 2012: -- With both gasoline and diesel engines having their own particular advantages and disadvantages, automotive component manufacturer Delphi is looking for a best-of-both-worlds solution with a gasoline-powered engine that uses diesel engine-like technology for increased fuel efficiency. According to MIT’s Technology Review, such an engine has the potential to increase the fuel economy of gasoline-powered cars by 50 percent and give hybrid vehicles a run for their money in the fuel economy stakes... 


* Florida - Volvo Trucks unveils "Blue Power" natural gas strategy for North America 

Miami,FL,USA -Truck News (CAN) by Lou Smyrlis -19 May 2012: -- Volvo Trucks has announced it will launch its own 13-liter liquefied natural gas (LNG) engine for the North American market in 2014, claiming “significant” fuel efficiency gains compared with current natural gas products. Combined with the company’s previously announced offering of compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered Volvo VNM and VNL model daycabs, the new diesel ignition engine provides Volvo with a range of natural gas-powered transportation solutions. Volvo is also testing another fuel that can be produced from natural gas, DME (dimethyl ether), which Volvo executives believe has the potential to become an attractive alternative for the North American market...


* Illinois - Cat now offering 15-litre engine in CT660 vocational truck 

Peoria,ILL,USA -Truck News (CAN) -May 18, 2012: -- Caterpillar has announced the availability of its 15-litre CT15 engine in the CT660 vocational truck. The new offering can provide as much as 550 hp and 1,850 lb.-ft. of torque, the company says... The CT15 reaches peak torque at 2,100 rpm and pulls strong at low engine speeds, allowing for shifting at lower speeds when accelerating, according to the company... Based on a Navistar design, the CT15 uses exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) to eliminate NOx in-cylinder without requiring exhaust aftertreatment... 


* BC /Canada - Westport upgrades 15-L LNG engine 

Vancouver,BC,Canada -Truck News -17 May 2012: -- Westport Innovations says it has improved the performance of its flagship HD15L LNG engine... The natural gas engine is offered in Class 8 Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks... Improvements include an increase in horsepower and torque, to 550 hp and 1,850 lb.-ft. torque. The new ratings have been offered in Australia for several years, Westport says, and have accrued more than 10 million kilometres of service. The new rating will be available in early 2013, according to the company... The engine will also feature an optimized emissions equipment system, tailored for the lower emissions profile of natural gas, which will reduce cost and weight while lessening user intervention, Westport claimed...
