ENGINE MAKERS * USA - New Small V-6 Engine Coming From Ford

(Ford's Photo: A Duratec 2011 Mustang V6 engine)
Dearborn,MI,USA -The Car Connection, by Kurt Ernst -October 11, 2011: ... We now know that the Ford Transit Van will be assembled in the U.S., and we know that the Shelby GT 500 will be getting an all-new 5.8-liter V-8. The document was also word of an all-new, small displacement V-6 to be built at Ford’s Lima, Ohio engine plant... As an all-new engine, it will surely come with fuel saving and power-boosting technologies such as gasoline direct injection and variable valve timing... The question remaining, then, is whether the new V-6 will replace the current 3.5 and 3.7-liter V-6 engines, or simply supplement them. We suppose that decision will be made once details of the new engine’s power output and fuel economy are known...

* GM Announces New Ecotec Small Engine Family

(Photo: GM's newest Ecotec small engine family)
Detroit,MICH,USA -The Car Connection, by Ernst Kurt -October 12, 2011: ... Since downsizing engines for improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions is the easiest way for manufacturers to comply with ever-tightening regulations, GM has announced an all-new global family of Ecotec engines, set to begin production in mid-decade. While the new Ecotec engines will feature performance-and-gas-mileage-boosting-technology such as gasoline direct injection, turbocharging and multi-fuel capability, they’ll also be quite a bit smaller than today’s Ecotec engines...  Displacements will range from 1.0 liter to 1.5 liters, and GM envisions production of over 2 million engines a year by the end of the decade. To reduce production costs and simplify global assembly, the engines will use a modular approach with interchangeable components...

* Jacobs Enhancing Engine Braking Technology

(Photo - A Jake Brake Device: The device is installed on the top of the diesel engine and the trucker uses a switch on the cab to activate it)
Bloomfield,CT,USA -Transpot Topics -11 Oct 2011: -- Jacobs Vehicle Systems  said it has recently enhanced its engine braking technology to include engine decompression capability...  Jacobs said its prototype bleeder/decompression system is “a bolt-on device which holds an exhaust valve open during startup to reduce the amount of torque required to start the engine” ...  It said that its test data shows that this reduction in torque leads to a reduction in energy consumed by the starter...

* New motor oil category could help meet mpg rules

Washington,DC,USA -Fleet Owner -Oct 11, 2011: -- Diesel engine makers and truck OEMs will, within a few short years, expect motor oil to contribute to the mandated greenhouse-gas emissions (GHG) reduction and corresponding increase in miles per gallon performance for commercial vehicles set out in new federal rules that will start taking effect in 2014... That’s why engine makers have already petitioned for a new API oil-service category to be in place by the time the new federal GHG/mpg rules go fully into effect. Those rules will start to kick in just three years from now. Under the rules, buses and medium- and heavy-duty trucks as well as pickups and vans will be required to meet federally mandated fuel efficiency levels designed to reduce the amount of GHG emissions they produce... Developed jointly by the Dept. of Transportation (DOT) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) along with input from the trucking industry, environmental groups, and state governments – especially California – the standards will go into effect in stages from 2014 to 2018 and impose different fuel-efficiency targets based on the size and weight of given vehicle types...

(Photo: The Volvo 13 litee engine)
Greensboro,NC,USA -Truck News (CAN) -Oct 12, 2011: -- Volvo Group claims to have assumed the number one position for US sales of 13-litre engines, America's new favourite engine size...  The manufacturer noted that for the first time, 13-litre engines have become the top choice for US Class 8 truck customers...  Volvo cited year-to-date Class 8 US truck registration data from R.L. Polk, which showed it as the 13-litre leader as well as data that showed it atop the 11-litre market segment. The figures include sales of 11- and 13-litre engines from Mack...

* Indiana, USA - Cummins reveals deal with Chinese CV manufacturer

Columbus,IND,USA-Transport Engineer (UK), by John Challen -12 Oct 2011: -- Cummins Turbo Technologies has announced that its latest range of small turbochargers will be fitted to 2.8 to 3.8-litre diesel engine vehicles made by Foton from the end of September...  This supply agreement marks the production launch of company's new range of small turbo machinery, aimed at the rapidly expanding light commercial vehicle market...  Jim Lyons, president of Cummins Turbo Technologies, explains that the new Holset turbocharger range uses low-cost manufacture, with assembly close to the customer for maximum efficiency...

* Cummins Could Add 7,000 Employees

Columbus,IND,USA -PickUpTruck, by Mark Williams -October 12, 2011:  --  Cummins needs to add as many as 7,000 employees over the next five years to meet expected demand...  Cummins predicts sales growth will rise more than 60 percent by 2015 largely because of the global need for more diesel and natural gas engines. Most of the growth is expected to be in South America, China and India, but expansion into other markets is expected as well. Over the next 10 years, Cummins expects the need for more reductions in engine pollution and more stringent fuel efficiency rules across the globe will dominate engine technology and development, requiring more engineering resources...  Cummins said tighter standards for engine exhausts have allowed the company to leverage its engineering expertise, particularly in emerging markets where some of its U.S. rivals lack the technical skill to comply with the tougher rules...
