Brussels,Belgium -Fleet Europe, by Michel Buckinx -3 Oct 2011: -- The European Freight Forwarding Index published by Danske Bank indicates a gentle degree of growth in freight forwarding in September, up from 46 in August to 53 in September, short of the level of 57 expected by participants to the survey. Road and sea freight volumes were nevertheless up compared to two months ago. In air freight, volumes are forecast to decrease...
* UK - DfT gives green light to longer semi trailer trial
London,EN,UK -Road Transport, by Roger Brown -11 October 2011: -- The Department for Transport (DfT) has given the go-ahead for a ten-year trial of 900 semi-trailers at an increased length of 2.05 metres, as well as 900 trailers at an increase of 1 metre... The DfT says it will not permit any increase in the current maximum gross vehicle weight of 44 tonnes... Roads minister, Mike Penning, says the longer vehicles provide up to 13% more loading space - allowing fewer journeys to transport the same amount of goods without compromising safety - and the trial will provide a £33m boost to the haulage industry...
* UK - Longer semi-trailer trial divides road transport sector opinion
London,EN,UK -Transport Toics, by Chris Druce -11 October 2011: -- The Department for Transport’s (DfT) decision to begin trialling 1,800 longer semi-trailers on UK roads from January of next year has reignited debate over whether longer vehicles are the way forward for the road transport industry... From next year a 10-year trial of 900 semi-trailers at an increased length of 2.05m and 900 trailers at an increased length of 1m (over the current 13.6m maximum) will begin..... An independent contractor, to be announced next month, will conduct four-monthly assessments covering the operational safety, manoeuvrability and economy of the longer trailers... The DfT says it will cap the number of trailers operators can run to ensure fairness, but it will not provide compensation if the trial is cancelled early...
* South Africa - Lehnkering in the hands of Imperial Group
Durban,SA -Truck Europe (Belgium), by Claude Yvens -30 Septiembre 2011: -- South African company Imperial Group has announced that it has taken over all the shares of German logistics company Lehnkering. Imperial had already made several acquisitions in Europe (including Nestrans in 1999, Haniel Reederei in 2000, the contract logistics activities of Gillhuber in 2005 and Laabs Tank Logistic in 2007), but this latest operation is by far the largest undertaken by the group to date. Imperial Logistics International will move up from 3,500 to 6,200 persons, and its turnover will be 1.4 billion Euros... The Lehnkering brand name will be retained...
* Germany - DB Schenker Logistics takes over the activities of Jean Heck
Berlin,Germany -Fleet Europe (Belgium), by Michel Buckinx -13 Oct 2011: -- Transport company Jean Heck (Eupen), which specialises in international transport, distribution and logistics, is to join the DB Schenker network... The DB Schenker site at Aachen is to close and the 60 persons who work there will join the Jean Heck site at Eupen with its 130 persons. Through this takeover, DB Schenker is clearly marking its intention to strengthen its position on the Belgian market... For Jean Heck, this operation enables it to extend its range of services, particularly in the domains of sea and air freight. Schenker NV is the Belgian division of DB Schenker Logistics, employing 655 persons on 7 sites. This is the fourth important company move in the region in a short space of time, following the purchase of Maes by Jost, of Mathieu Transports (Eupen) by Magetra and of Mond (Welkenraedt) by Dentressangle...
