Winter Haven using cameras, fiber optic lines to help keep vehicles moving
Winter Haven,FL,USA -The Ledger, by Rick Rousos -September 9, 2010: -- The city is now watching traffic with 15 new eyes that local and state officials hope will be a huge help in unclogging traffic jams... A project with a $4.1 million price tag includes 12 miles of underground fiber optic lines and 15 closed-circuit cameras... In a project shared by the city and Florida Department of Transportation, the cameras, with 1.5-mile visibility, have been installed around town. They monitor 48 intersections that have traffic signals... On Thursday, after a month of testing of the new monitoring system at the Winter Haven police building, the city opened the doors to the media... The 15 cameras swivel and send images along the fiber optic lines to LED screens at the police station. A technician monitors the screens during the heaviest times of the day for traffic and can control the cameras. The city has two technicians... If there's a problem and nobody is monitoring the screens, the system alerts Hamric on his Blackberry... If there's a problem such as an accident, the technicians are to alert emergency dispatchers. That's where a life could be saved... The key to the system that will help traffic move more smoothly: When technicians notice a traffic backup, they can change the timing of lights in the area without leaving their seats...
