TOLLS * USA - DC area studies 1,650 miles of toll lanes
Washington,DC,USA -Land Line Magazine -September 14, 2010: -- A task force in Washington, DC, is recommending a massive shift in the way people use highways and land in the region. One recommendation is to develop a 1,650-mile toll network on new and existing lanes. The task force has scheduled a public meeting for Wednesday, Sept. 15, about the proposal... Members of the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board developed a handful of “what if?” scenarios as part of a study commissioned in 2006... That study, which will be presented to the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments on Wednesday, includes recommendations for 650 miles of new toll lanes; the conversion of 500 lane miles from general purpose lanes to toll lanes; the conversion of 350 lane miles of high-occupancy vehicle, or HOV lanes, to toll lanes; and 150 additional toll lanes... Under one scenario, toll rates for cars would range from 20 cents per mile to more than $2 per mile depending on traffic flow and time of day. This is known as congestion pricing or variable pricing. Toll information for trucks was not provided in the 70-page report...
