RUMOURS * France: Daimler-Renault-Nissan alliance bears watching
Paris,France -Fleet Owner, by Brian Straight -April 6, 2010: -- As reports abound today that automakers Renault and Nissan will announce a parts-sharing and technology-swapping alliance with Daimler tomorrow morning, it is just another example of the blurring of lines when it comes to choosing which vehicle to purchase these days... And this one should bear watching by the trucking industry as well, as some reports suggest there may be commercial implications in this deal. The Detroit News reported this morning it is possible that Renault may sell its 20% stake in AB Volvo, parent of both Mack Trucks and Volvo Trucks North America, to Daimler. A second report, this one from the New York Times, suggests collaboration on light commercial vehicles may be part of the arrangement...
* USA - Daimler N.A., commercial truck market not affected by Renault alliance
Brussels,Belgium -Fleet Owner, by Brian Straight -Apr 7, 2010: -- The new alliance announced Wednesday by Daimler AG and Renault-Nissan will have no immediate effect on the North American commercial market, despite the companies sharing technology and developing a new commercial van for the European market, a Daimler spokesperson told Fleet Owner... The alliance, in which Renault-Nissan will take a 3.1% stake in Daimler in exchange for 3.1% stakes in both Renault and Nissan (Renault owns 44% of Nissan), will focus primarily on common architecture for small vehicles and powertrain technology with a particular focus on engines... In addition, the alliance will produce a new light commercial van for Daimler’s Mercedes-Benz Vans unit. The van, based on Renault’s Kangoo, will be sold in Europe and will not be “coming here,” Han Tjan, Daimler’s director of corporate communications for North America, told Fleet Owner... The companies will also share powertrain components, including a small diesel engine and transmission from Renault-Nissan for Daimler’s mid-size van, the Mercedes-Benz Vito, which is sold in Europe. It is believed by sharing the costs associated with the van production, the products will become more cost-effective for the marketplace and product offerings will be enlarged... * China - Foton Motor to spend $1.47 bln to expand capacity
Shanghai,China -Gasgoo, by George Gao -April 6, 2010: -- Beiqi Foton Motor, China's leading commercial vehicle producer, recently announced its plans to spend 10 billion yuan ($1.47 bln) over the next two to three years to expand the capacity of its vehicle and engine production, media reported... As the commercial vehicle subsidiary of Beijing Auto, Foton Motor aims to lift its vehicle production capacity to as much as 1.5 million units by 2013, the year in which the company is expected to become China's largest production base of commercial vehicles and engines... Meanwhile, Foton will corporate further with Cummins Inc on the engine project. The two sides will invest 2.7 billion yuan in the project, aiming for an annual capacity of 400,000 units. Gasoline engines will also be made for Foton's passenger vehicles... Foton Motor recently started construction of a 3 billion plant in Miyun county, Beijing, mainly for its passenger car project. The new factory is expected to have an annual capacity of 200,000 vehicles...
* Turkey - MAN reduces its truck and bus targets - Crisis hits the truck sector most
Ankara,Turkey -Anatolia News Agency/Hurriyet Daily News -April 4, 2010: -- The global crisis is affecting the bus sector with a delay in orders, according to a top executive of MAN Kamyon and Otobüs, the Turkish subsidiary of German MAN Nutzfahrzeuge. The company is one of the world's leading manufacturers of engineering equipment and commercial vehicles and supplies trucks, buses and diesel engines... MAN Kamyon and Otobüs reaped 272 million euros in turnover last year by selling 1,576 buses, said Tuncay Bekiroğlu, chief executive responsible for sales at MAN Kamyon and Otobüs. The company aims to sell 1,000 buses and reach a total of 165 million euros in turnover this year due to the impacts of the economic crisis, Bekiroğlu added... MAN produced 102,000 vehicles worldwide in 2008, but this figure dropped to 40,000 last year with the economic crisis. But this decline was seen in all companies in the truck and bus industry, said Bekiroğlu... Last year, the company exported vehicles to 41 countries including Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and France, Yavuz said... (FIGURES: MAN produced 102,000 vehicles worldwide in 2008.
