AVOIDING TRUCKS' THEFT * UK - Northants Police cuts HGV freight thefts by 37%

Regular 'truckers' surgery' was set up for drivers to speak to police on a range of issues affecting them

Northants,Northamptonshire,UK -Road Transport, by Chris Tindall -2 April 2010: -- Northants Police says it has bucked national trends and cut truck freight thefts by 37% after it spent a year building relationships with HGV drivers and allowing them to confide in the force... Thefts reported to Northants Police were reduced to 73 during 2009, from an average of 115 per year for the previous four years, whereas the national figure, according to Truckpol figures for 2009, show thefts from trucks rose 7% last year... Northants Police claims the reduction is down to its launch last April of Operation Stammtisch, in which a regular 'truckers' surgery' was set up for drivers to speak to police on a range of issues affecting them... However, the RHA has cast doubt on the large drop in thefts being solely attributable to the launch of Operation Stammtisch (which is a German term meaning 'regular get-together' or 'meeting'), has to date been adopted by 22 other police forces... A Northants Police spokeswoman says that as part of Operation Stammtisch, advice is also offered to foreign truck drivers who are unaware of UK laws in an effort to educate them...
