TRUCKING TROUBLES * Ireland - 200 hauliers out of business

Dublin,Ireland -HGV Ireland -April 23, 2010: -- An estimated 200 road haulage companies have failed or ceased trading in the past 12 months with rising fuel prices and the recently introduced carbon tax driving dozens more haulage businesses to the brink of closure, the Irish Road Haulage Association (IRHA) has revealed... Rising fuel costs and other difficulties facing the road haulage industry will be debated in detail this weekend when hundreds of road hauliers converge on the Galway Bay Hotel, Salthill for the Association’s Annual Conference... The conference is expected to hear angry calls from delegates for the Association to step up its opposition to the introduction of the carbon tax which has increased the cost of diesel by five cent per litre, on top of a five cent excise duty increase in the previous Budget... The Association, which is the representative body for the Irish road transport industry, estimates that the carbon tax and rising fuel costs have increased the cost of a typical trip from Drogheda to Cork by as much as €40...
