HEAVIER TRUCKS * USA - Will heavier trucks threaten public safety?

Sebring,FL,USA -The Highlands Today, by JOE SEELIG - April 25, 2010: -- The Florida Legislature is considering bills in the House and Senate that would allow big-rig trucks to increase their loads by 8,000 pounds above the current 80,000 pound limit... "Nearly 70 percent of freight by weight is hauled by the industry, making trucking the cornerstone of commerce in the United States"... Matt Ubben, vice president of public affairs with the Florida Trucking Association which supports the bill, said Friday they were trying, in the face of this economy, to represent their members. Their ability to move more freight with fewer trips will save on fuel costs and reduce congestion on the roadways, he said... As far as costs to the infrastructure, Ubben said that fuel taxes are collected and placed into the State Transportation Trust Fund. That money was supposed to be dedicated for infrastructure... What's happened this legislative session is, although the budget has not yet been passed both the house and senate have agreed to move $160 million from the trust fund to its general fund... A coalition of Florida law enforcement and emergency response officials, public safety advocates and municipal leaders warned Thursday that the legislation increasing maximum truck weights in the state by four tons would threaten public safety...
