TRUCKING INDUSTRY * USA - OSHA fines trucking firm $9,100 in crushing death

Omaha,Neb,USA -AP/KTIV -August 12, 2009: -- The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration has fined a trucking company $9,100 for failing to take precautions that could have prevented a fatal accident... OSHA's Charles Adkins said Wednesday the accident that killed 62-year-old Brian Cellar near Endicott was preventable. OSHA says Omaha-based Wynne Transport Service Inc. failed to report the accident to OSHA within eight hours, as required... Cellar was preparing to pump liquid asphalt from one parked truck to another when the accident happened on June 12. 1 of the trucks unexpectedly rolled into the other and crushed Cellar because its parking brake wasn't set and the wheels were not chocked...


* California Man Sentenced for Cheating Truckers

Los Angeles,CAL,USA -The Journal of Commerce, by William B. Cassidy -Aug 12, 2009: -- The second of two California men who used information gleaned from federal Web sites to con trucking companies and brokers out of $2.7 million was sent to prison Aug. 10... U.S. District Judge, John F. Walter, sentenced Viacheslav Berkovich, 34, of Los Angeles, to four and a half years in federal prison for his part in a scheme that defrauded approximately 300 victims, mostly motor carriers and brokerage firms... In addition to the jail term, the judge ordered Berkovich to pay restitution to the victims of the scheme, imposing a tentative restitution order of $2,773,074... They ran their scheme from about January 2007 until September 2008, using such names as Cargoland Brokerage, Progressive Trucking, Vega Trucking and Barkfelt Transport...


* Unlicensed Truck Driver Dies In Boulder Canyon Crash



Boulder,CO,USA -ABC7NEWS -August 12, 2009: -- The Colorado State Patrol said a dump truck with brake problems veered off the highway in Boulder Canyon and crashed, killing the driver... State troopers said Omar Enrique Silva Marmolejo, 24, of Denver, died at the scene of the accident Tuesday morning... Investigators said the red 1994 Kenworth T600 Dump Truck was loaded with asphalt and was heading down Colorado 119 when it had brake problems... The truck ran off the highway, struck the mountainside and rolled... Investigators said Marmoleo did not have a driver's license. They don't know whether he was wearing a seat belt... The truck is owned by Angel's Trucking in Denver, according to the Colorado State Patrol... The carrier already offers “LCL” or “less than container load” service for ocean container shipments coming from Asia to the U.S. in partnership with APL Logistics as well as expedited LTL in partnership with TNT for air freight service to the U.S. from Europe, Wynne noted. Now the trick is to bundle Con-way Freight’s part of those operations into one division to move shippers a step closer to “one-stop shopping” for global freight service...
