Drum Brakes * USA - Help Truck Drivers to Comply with US Stopping Distance Regulation

Troy,MI,USA -ATZ Online, by Bettina Merkelbach -10 Aug 2009: -- Arvin Meritor recently announced that its portfolio of Meritor Q Plus drum brakes will enable North American truck operators to meet the recently issued US government mandate for shortened stopping distance requirements. According to the company, it has worked for more than three years to prepare the product in anticipation of this ruling. The drum brake is currently undergoing the final phases of implementation testing to meet this new requirement... According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the new standard requires a typical tractor-trailer travelling at 60 mph come to a complete stop in 30 percent less distance (76 meters versus the existing standard of 108 meters). The new rule applies only to new truck tractors, and does not include single-unit trucks, trailers and buses. The new rule will be phased in over the next four years beginning with 2012 models...
