MEXICANS' TRUCKS * USA - NAFTA issues yet to be resolved

Shippers are still hoping some progress will be made regarding cross-border trade

Mexico City,DF,MEX -Logistics Management,Patrick Burnson -11 Aug 2009: -- The recently-concluded 2009 North American Leaders’ Summit yielded few answers for shippers concerned about the free movement of goods on highways, and provided even less information on the current ban on Mexican trucks... Meanwhile, shippers are hoping that Mexico’s President, Felipe Calderon’s plea for fairness will prevail over the political interests of the U.S. Teamster’s Union and other powerful lobbyist to extend the ban indefinitely... As reported in LM, the failure of Congress to renew a pilot program earlier this year has brought about retaliatory action with Mexican-imposed tariffs and other punitive trade barriers designed to hurt major U.S. shippers. Indeed, nearly 90 percent of American agricultural and manufactured exports have been impacted. According to Mexican Economy Minister, Gerardo Ruiz, approximately $2.4 billion worth of exports from 40 U.S. states are at risk if the issue is not resolved...
