* United Road hauls more vehicles sold on Web sites
Detroit,MI,USA -Crain's Detroit Business, by Bill Shea -Mar. 1, 2009: -- The grisly state of the domestic automobile industry has decimated the vehicle-hauling business, but one local trucking firm is predicting significant growth because it's nabbed a chunk of the growing online auction market... Romulus-based United Road Services Inc.'s strategy has been to aggressively pursue the nationwide online vehicle market, including door-to-door service for car auction Web sites such as eBay Motors and retail sites such as AutoTrader.com, CEO Mike Wysocki said... United's online segment is expected to increase to 18 percent of the hauler's business this year, up from 5 percent two years ago. That translates into 336,000 cars moved from online auctions this year compared to 195,000 last year and 68,000 in 2007...
* Trucking company Con-Way cuts pay for executives, workers, suspends 401(k) match
San Mateo,CAL,USA -AP/Yahoo Finance -March 9, 2009: -- Trucking company Con-Way Inc. said Monday it has cut salaries for its chief executive and other top management by 10 percent and reduced other expenses in an effort to save as much as $130 million this year... Con-Way also suspended its 401(k) match and reduced pay for all other executives and employees by 5 percent at Con-way Freight and Con-way Inc.... The measures are in addition to 2,500 layoffs, suspension of merit-based pay increases and other cuts implemented in the fourth quarter of 2008...
