REST AREAS * USA - OOIDA members push back against VDOT plan to close 25 places

VA,USA -Land Line Magazine, by Clarissa Kell-Holland -March 13, 2009: -- Virginia’s cost-cutting proposal to trim nearly $12 million from its budget by shuttering 25 of its 41 rest areas continues to stir up opposition among truckers and some state lawmakers... So far, more than 500 people, including several OOIDA members, have turned out at three of the 11 public meetings the Virginia Department of Transportation is hosting around the state to discuss the proposed budget cuts. None of the OOIDA members in attendance said they have heard anyone speak in favor of VDOT’s proposal... VDOT says the cuts are needed to make up for a $2.6 billion transportation budget shortfall... OOIDA Life Member Keith Magers of Weyers Cave, VA, was on hand and said that none of the speakers, including two state delegates, supported VDOT’s proposed budget cuts...
