Obama Administration * USA - Weighing Nationwide Vehicle Emissions Policy, Browner Says

Washington,DC,USA -ClimateWire (only subscribers), by Darren Samuelsohn -23 Feb 2009: -- The White House is considering a nationwide policy for regulating greenhouse gas emissions from motor vehicles to replace the current patchwork of state and federal regulations. Carol Browner, President Obama's coordinator for energy and climate issues, says a national suite of environmental restrictions for automobiles would involve linking together the Department of Transportation's (DOT's) implementation of corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards and the state of California's petition seeking to enforce a law setting strict greenhouse gas limits on vehicles... Obama recently ordered the EPA to re-evaluate California's waiver request. He also called on DOT to finalize rules this spring that begin the first overhaul of the country's fuel economy requirements in over 30 years... Auto industry executives are pushing for a nationwide set of environmental standards. Browner, meanwhile, further reports that the new environmental rules would dovetail with White House oversight of the auto industry's plans to use $17.4 billion in federal loans...
