HOS * USA - Truck Driver Hours of Service Rules Are Here to Stay
New York,NY,USA -Gerson Lehrman Group: Analysis by: John Schulz -March 11, 2009: -- The Teamsters union is petitioning the new Transportation Secretary, Ray LaHood, to overturn the changes in the truck driver hours of service rules, which were modernized in 2003 and have withstood numerous court challenges already. This seems like pure politics on the part of the Teamsters union... For at least the fourth time in this decade, the Teamsters union is challenging the legitimacy of the revised hours of service rules governing 7.5 million truck drivers... The trucking lobby has answered all these petitions with comments of its own. It has shown that under the new HOS rules, the trucking industry in 2006 had the lowest per-vehicle-mile injury crash rate since the Department of Transportation began keeping records... The Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics backed up the DOT's findings. The BLS showed that the rate of occupational injuries and illnesses for the trucking industry fell by nearly 18 percent between 2004 and 2007. In general, the argument that these HOS changes have made the highways less safer is just false. The record proves otherwise. It's time for the Teamsters to hurl one more Hail Mary pass at the union-friendly Obama administration... (Photo: us news.com)
