Washington,DC,USA -eTrucker, by Jill Dunn -9 Feb 2009: -- The Environmental Protection Agency has granted California a waiver to allow it to begin enforcement of in-use performance standards for transport refrigeration units July 17... On Jan. 9, the EPA granted the California Air Resources Board a waiver from preemption that affects an estimated 40,000 TEU engines operating in the state. It will require TEUs to have emission control technology no older than seven years, which will be achievable through new emission control mechanisms or buying a new engine... A refrigerated trailer is a trailer van, railcar or shipping container equipped with a TRU or TRU generator set. Refrigeration systems powered off the engine used to propel the vehicle are not considered TRUs, such as belt-driven refrigeration compressors mounted on the motor vehicle engine...
