TRUCKING INDUSTRY NEWS * USA - SMX, Decker scale back

Fort Dodge,IA,USA -The Fort Dodge Messenger, by BILL SHEA -February 7, 2009: -- The national recession has hit home for two major trucking companies in Fort Dodge... Smithway Motor Xpress Inc. has been forced to lay off workers and cut wages... Decker Truck Line Inc. has also made some changes, although company officials aren't revealing any details... She said Decker management did ''realign some workers to deal with the freight we have"... According to O'Tool, business for Decker is still good, although the traffic in building materials is down.... At least one local trucking company is weathering the recession with no cutbacks... ''We're aware that there's economic problems out there, but we're doing pretty well,'' said Dan Oberg, president of Oberg Freight Co. ''We're still doing the same business we were two years ago''...


* Tanking Economy Drives Down Trucking Industry

East Peoria,IL,USA -week/tv, by Gina Ford -Feb 6, 2009: -- Trucking company owners are anxiously waiting for Washington to approve the stimulus package. Many say the tanking economy is taking their business with it... Bobby White owns a small trucking company, and he says in 16 years of driving semis, this has been one of the toughest times he's had to endure... He says the hot commodity these days is heavy machinery. White says it pays four to six dollars a mile. Recently, he's had to stop moving grain, because he says it costs more than it was worth... And White isn't the only one. The Associate Director of the Midwest Truckers Association says they represent 27 hundred companies, many of which are feeling the pinch... Mark Forbes says his business has survived due to the diversification of his freights... And although he has has been fortunate enough to stay ahead, other truckers say if they do get help from Washington soon, their businesses may run out of fuel... (See Video)
