Freightways * New Zealand - Road user tax “reckless”

Auckland,New Zealand -The National Business Review, by Allan Swann -August 18 2008: -- The government’s controversial road user charge increase has hurt the freight industry, adding to the sector’s woes in difficult economic times... Freightways managing director Dean Bracewell estimated that the sudden increase brought in July has cost the cost the company between $500,000 and $1 million... In a sector that is seeing increased margin shrinkage due to labour, occupancy and fuel costs, any unexpected additions were difficult to deal with. On the same day the government unveiled its new KiwiRail service, transport minister Annette King announced a sudden 7% hike in road user tax, without consulting the industry... (Watch video)
