MONITORING TRUCKS * USA - County to hear plan for secure shipping of maquila goods
A three-year project calls for three participating maquiladoras to allow devices to be installed on 30 of their cargo trucks to transmit data to a monitoring facility
El Paso,TX,USA -El Paso Times, by Erica Molina Johnson -18 Aug 2008: -- A $3.6 million project that will track secure maquiladora cargo from plants in Juárez into El Paso could move forward Monday at Commissioners Court... The court will be asked to approve and authorize an agreement with the Texas Department of Transportation for the Secure Border Trade Demonstration Project... The three-year project calls for three participating maquiladoras to allow devices to be installed on 30 of their cargo trucks to transmit data to a monitoring facility... The trucks will be monitored for cargo tampering and will include global positioning system tracking that also transmits information about traffic, weather, the vehicle and other details... A computer program will track the information and alert officials if anything is out of the ordinary... Bob Geyer, the county's transit manager, said the trucks on the system will drive along a predetermined route...
