MONITORING TRUCKERS * USA: Trucking camera maker Lytx acquired for $500 million

* Illinois - Last year, Lytx added 102,000 new systems across 365 companies

-- Lytx, the leading maker of cameras for monitoring truck drivers, will be acquired by the Chicago-based private equity firm GTCR for a cash payment of $500 million... As Fortune reported last spring, cameras used to monitor truck drivers are experiencing fast adoption in the trucking industry. Last year, Lytx added 102,000 new systems across 365 companies. That included one of the largest contracts to date in the category, installing cameras in more than 6,000 trucks owned by Swift Transportation. The company provides ongoing services on a subscription basis and says it signed $200 million in new contracts in 2015 – 80 percent more than in 2014... Lytx’s driver cameras are almost certainly a transitional technology as the trucking industry is moving inexorably towards automation and, eventually, self-driving trucks. Lytx has taken some steps that help prepare it for that shift, including an add-on to its camera system that provides drivers with alerts when they stray out of their lane or follow another vehicle too closely. That detection and decision technology could be integrated into more advanced forms of automation or autonomous driving...

MONITORING TRUCKS * Australia: Through the Intelligent Access Program

* Queensland - IAP numbers on the rise

-- Transport Certification Australia (TCA) has reported an increase in the number of heavy vehicles that enrolled in the Intelligent Access Program (IAP) over the last 12 months... The IAP is a voluntary program that uses the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) to monitor heavy vehicles' road use, giving transport operators flexible access to the Australian road network to suit their specific business and operational needs...

* S.A. - Tougher penalties drafted for South Eastern Freeway

-- The South Australian State Government is drafting new laws with tougher penalties for truck drivers caught speeding and failing to use a low gear on the South Eastern Freeway... Transport and Infrastructure Minister, Stephen Mullighan, said the measures were being made in response to coronial recommendations handed down into the death of truck driver, James Venning, as well as other serious incidents involving out-of-control trucks on the freeway... “These terrible crashes came at the cost of innocent lives and revealed the tragic consequences of unsafe vehicles and unsafe driving on the steep freeway descent,” Mullighan said and added "The Government will work with industry and road safety groups to design an inspection program for heavy vehicle to crack down on unroadworthy trucks"...

MONITORING TRAFFIC: 'Weigh-in-Motion' * USA

* Idaho - To launch 'weigh-in-motion' monitor system in April

(Photo)
Boise,ID,USA -Land Line, by Greg Grisolano -15 March 2013: -- A new system of sensors and cameras will aim to streamline weight enforcement along U.S. Highway 20 near Ashton, ID, according to a release from the Idaho Transportation Department... The state’s goal is to assist with weight enforcement and improve efficiency for truckers who are properly loaded... The pilot system consists of loops with sensors embedded in the pavement and of poles with cameras installed on both sides of the loops along the roadway. Data transmitted from the system will be available online to ITD, the Montana Department of Transportation, Idaho State Police and local law enforcement agencies. Inspectors at portable weigh stations in Ashton, Island Park and elsewhere on U.S. 20 will use the information to identify violators... The sensors are physically cut into the asphalt on Highway 20. As trucks roll over the sensors, they record the truck type, axle configuration and weight. Cameras mounted above the sensors can capture the truck’s physical description, as well as tag numbers...

Study * USA - Driver-monitoring technology poised for growth

New York,NY,USA -Fleet Owner, by Sean Kilcarr -Nov 29, 2010: ...  While governments have not yet proposed financial incentives to encourage the public to invest in advanced safety systems, many countries have set goals to reduce traffic accidents – and keeping drivers alert has the potential to make a difference in those crash calculations... Larry Fisher, ABI’s research director-NextGen, told FleetOwner that a wide variety of active safety and driver assistance systems – such as lane departure warning and active braking technologies – are making steady progress down the long migration path from high-end exclusivity to mass-market appeal as a way to enhance existing safety and/or convenience for both commercial fleets and everyday motorists... As advanced sensor-based devices such as radar and cameras are introduced, however, the challenge for manufacturers will be to deliver as much added value from these components as possible, said Fisher... Fisher also pointed out that ABI’s study indicates data analysis-based systems will lead the market for driver-monitoring features, at least through 2015...
