Traffic jams are a constant problem in the Netherlands

La Halle,The Netherlands -NRC Handelsblad/Automotive Digest - November 16, 2009: -- Dutch plan aimed at eliminating chronic traffic jams and cutting carbon emissions. Dutch currently paying annual road tax which will be abolished. Currently paying 600 euros per year for a mid-sized car. Will pay few cents instead for every kilometer on the road... New car prices will drop about 25% in 2012 w/ abolition of purchase and road tax... Singapore has similar scheme for charging according to amount of travel. TAX ENFORCEMENT * USA - New Mexico to step up road tax

On Feb. 16, New Mexico will begin a crack-down on trucking companies not paying all the weight-distance and trip taxes they owe...

NM,USA -eTrucker, by Jill Dunn -9 Feb 2009: --The state’s taxation and revenue and public safety departments stepped up enforcement after two 72-hour enforcement blitzes at the Gallup and San Jon entry ports last year. That revealed hundreds of carriers were not paying these taxes that help maintain and build roads... The enforcement efforts resulted in more than $150,000 collected in delinquent taxes and 320 citations to be issued for safety violations... Enhanced compliance and collection drive will include additional personnel at entry ports, electronic license plate readers, improved data collection and analysis, dedicated staff to work directly with truckers and new field auditors to assure compliance...

Freightways * New Zealand - Road user tax “reckless”

Auckland,New Zealand -The National Business Review, by Allan Swann -August 18 2008: -- The government’s controversial road user charge increase has hurt the freight industry, adding to the sector’s woes in difficult economic times... Freightways managing director Dean Bracewell estimated that the sudden increase brought in July has cost the cost the company between $500,000 and $1 million... In a sector that is seeing increased margin shrinkage due to labour, occupancy and fuel costs, any unexpected additions were difficult to deal with. On the same day the government unveiled its new KiwiRail service, transport minister Annette King announced a sudden 7% hike in road user tax, without consulting the industry... (Watch video)
