FUEL COST CRISIS * Canada & USA - Diesel prices fuel economic worries for trucking industry in Atlantic Canada
Moncton,NB,CAN -Truck News, by Adam Ledlow -24 Feb 2008: -- Diesel fuel costs have become the trucking industry's number one worry according to the head of the Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association, who fears Atlantic Canada's economic competitiveness could be hurt if more isn't done to help struggling trucking firms... In a report from the Telegraph-Journal, APTA director Peter Nelson said that the four Atlantic provinces could consider easing diesel fuel taxes. In New Brunswick, for example, the government charges 16.9 cents per litre in tax for diesel fuel, compared to 10.7 cents for gasoline. Though the province previously cut the gas tax by 3.8 cents in 2006, no relief was extended to the trucking industry...
* USA - Senators propose bill that would require 100% of fuel surcharges be paid to O/Os
Washington,DC,USA -Truck News (CAN) -25 April 2008: -- New legislation put forth yesterday by two US Senators would require trucking companies to pay 100% of the fuel surcharge they collect to an owner/operator, or whoever actually pays for the fuel... The move has garnered praise from the Owner-Operators' Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA). Senators Olympia Snow (R-Maine) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) yesterday announced the proposed 'Truthful Reliable Understanding of Consumer Costs' Act... Here in Canada, there is currently no such legislation requiring carriers to pass 100% of the fuel surcharge they collect on to their owner/operators...
* Fuel Cost: 'It's a killer'

"It's a killer," said Karen Rasmussen, president and CEO of the Arizona Trucking Association, referring to the U.S. record high of $4.22 per gallon on average reached Thursday... The current market for independent truckers, makes it virtually impossible for them to add extra fuel costs for the shipment, mainly because there are currently more trucks than shippers... But that picture is expected to change in June when the demand for truckers traditionally increases, Bill Klimas, owner of Black Hawk Transportation in Tempe, said...
* Swift VP testifies in Washington about impact of high fuel prices
Washington,DC,USA -Truck News (CAN) -25 April 2008: -- The American Trucking Associations (ATA) continues to appeal to leaders in Washington to release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserves and temporarily suspend adding to the reserve, a move the association said will help stabilize petroleum markets... Swift Transportation vice-president Dave Berry testified to the House Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming, on behalf of the ATA yesterday. Berry said that releasing oil from the reserves would restore "rational behaviour" to the market...
* US Xpress exec discusses impact of high fuel costs
