Biofuel * China - Bans ethanol production to conserve corn

While the U.S. and many other countries are racing to increase their production of corn-based ethanol, China has just placed a moratorium on the production of the biofuel.

Beijing,China -Asia Times/Land Line Magazine -June 12, 2007: -- The Chinese have witnessed a 43-percent increase in the cost of pork in the past year – largely because corn prices have escalated because of demands from the ethanol industry... Pork is the main meat in the Chinese diet... Here in the states, President Bush has called for the annual production of 35 billion gallons of ethanol... Critics say that would require an additional 129,000 square miles of farmland – an area the size of Kansas and Iowa combined...
