* Could hydrogen fuel cell trucks drive our sustainable transport future?

Melbourne,VIC,Australia -The Conversation/RMIT University, by Roger Smith - 24 January 2012: -- Truck transport accounts for roughly 25% of energy used in the global transport sector, making it a substantial contributor (2.6%) to worldwide greenhouse gas emissions...  As concerns about greenhouse gas emissions continue to escalate, the introduction of zero-emission technologies within the freight industry is vitally important... Australia has some of the highest road lengths and freight levels per capita in the world. In fact, road freight transport is a $35 billion dollar industry here. Given the sheer size of the Australian land mass, the distance between major cities, and the lack of a feasible rail alternative, road freight is crucial to trade and commerce... With the price of diesel fuel rising considerably in the past decade and the possible expansion of the carbon tax to include fuel for trucks, those in charge of the freight industry worry their industry is under threat. Low-carbon alternatives to the current fleet are needed...   A possible solution to the problem, and one that we’ve been working towards, is the development of hydrogen fuel cells to replace traditional diesel engines in trucks... Hydrogen fuel cells work by taking hydrogen gas (H₂) and combining it with oxygen (O₂) to generate an electrical current (and water and some heat as byproducts)... The hydrogen gas is produced through a process called electrolysis (or breaking down) of water using electricity from renewable sources such as wind and solar... A zero-emission solution of this kind (in both hydrogen production and consumption) could play a key role in addressing the environmental, economic and social factors that will influence the sustainability of the truck industry in the future... Electric battery technology is another zero-emission option that could potentially be used in the transport sector (if charged using electricity from renewable sources). But this technology might not currently be suitable for the truck industry due its low energy storage capacity. For example, existing battery technology doesn’t allow trucks to cover the distance from Melbourne to Sydney on one charge... Biofuels, including ethanol, various bio-oils and biodiesel, provide another alternative transport fuel. “Second-generation” biofuels are likely to play some role for transport in future, but the amount of crops and land available for biofuel production will be severely limited... Enough crops and land need to be set aside to supply food for a growing world population, and there are also constraints on available land, water and fertilisers needed to grow “second-generation” fuel crops...

Biofuels usually come out on top, but a few bring bigger footprints... Palm oil from forests or rainforests that were clear-cut, soy oil from former rainforests. Can cause up to 10 times more carbon emissions than jet fuels. Researchers say all fuels have range of possible life cycle emissions... But on low end, all other biofuels are lower than conventional fuels... Fuels from switchgrass, salicornia, and palm oil from land not converted have lowest carbon footprints of all. Coming nowhere near emissions of normal fuels... Others lower their footprints by creating byproducts that can be used elsewhere. * USA - Valero seals biofuel deal with Australia’s Mission

Houston,TX,USA -The Financial Times (UK), by Sheila McNulty -December 11 2009: -- Valero Energy, the US’s biggest independent refiner, has signed a five-year deal, worth up to $3.5bn, to buy biodiesel from Mission NewEnergy, an Australia-listed biodiesel refiner... The agreement also gives Valero the right to buy up to 25 per cent of Mission at A$0.45 per common share, representing a 61 per cent premium to the current 30-day price. Mission’s share price closed at A$0.33 on December 8, 2009... The biodiesel sector has been among the big victims of the credit crisis, with companies unwilling to lend to or buy into a new and unproven fuel given the uncertainty of returns. That Valero is making this investment could signal renewed interest in this segment... In the second quarter of 2010, Mission is to begin supplying Valero up to 200,000 tonnes (60m gallons) of biodiesel per year. Valero can double that amount to 400,000 tonnes per year and extend the term by an additional five years...


* Natural Gas Makes Sense For Trucking Industry

San Francisco, CA ,USA -TruckingInfo -14 Dec 2009: -- While passenger cars may be well-suited to hybrid and electric technology, natural gas makes more sense for the trucking industry, and would be taking off among fleets, were it not for the economy, according to David Woodburn, a sell-side research analyst for ThinkEquity... As part of its Oil & Gas Production and Distribution Report, the Wall Street Transcript conducted several interviews with industry executives, including Woodburn, who was drilled on the topic of natural gas... Woodburn doesn't believe hybrid and electric vehicles will catch on with fleets because of the weight of the battery, which can reduce the carrying capacity by 10 or 20 percent, he said... He points to a number of incentives in place to encourage adoption of natural gas, including an excise tax credit for the fuel itself of 50 cents a gallon equivalent. Federal tax credits are also available to fund the purchase of natural gas or alternative fuel vehicles. Woodburn also discusses the NAT GAS legislation, which was introduced in the House in April and in the Senate in the summer. BIOFUELS * USA - BP Jumps Into Next-Generation Biofuels

With Plans to Build Florida Refinery

New York,NY,USA -The Wall Street Journal, by Russell Gold -19 Feb 2009: -- The energy firm BP PLC is making a major investment in extracting transportation fuel from plants as part of its effort to move rapidly to produce the next generation of biofuels. The company is extending an existing partnership with Verenium Corp. to include developing what would be the world's biggest facility to make biofuels from inedible plants such as grass. The facility, to be built in Florida, will be 25 times larger than Verenium's biofuels refinery in Mermentau, LA, a pilot project with BP that was commissioned only two weeks ago and currently is the world's largest such facility. The rapid move from starting a demonstration-scale refinery to pursuing a full-scale biofuels facility reflects the interest in cellulosic ethanol, which comes from breaking down plant material and turning it into ethanol that can be used to displace crude-oil-based fuels in cars and trucks... The next step is turning that process into a commercially viable business that can operate on an industrial scale...

Brooklyn,NY,USA -The Brooklyn Daily Eagle, by Charles Maldonado -4 Jan 2008: -- Tri-State Biodiesel, the city’s first major producer of biodiesel fuel, announced last week that it reached an agreement with mobile grocer FreshDirect to provide its entire fleet of trucks with a clean-burning biodiesel fuel blend... By February, Tri-State expects to have all of FreshDirect’s 150 trucks running on B5 fuel, a blend of 5 percent biodiesel (in this case, waste oil from restaurants) and 95 percent standard diesel... Tri-State announced plans in 2006 to build two major biodiesel fuel refineries in Brooklyn, one in Red Hook and one in Greenpoint...

To add some incentives, the Indiana Soybean Alliance has launched a grant program that will help pay for new blending facilities. With only four of the state’s fuel terminals currently offering biodiesel, ISA’s Biofuels Director Mark Walters said Indiana’s soybean farmers want to help terminals convert their current facilities so they are able to blend soy biodiesel... Having a reliable supply is one concern truckers have had about soy biodiesel and consistent quality is another. Walters says the industry has answered both those issues and he hopes more and more trucks will start running on a soy biodiesel blend...

A new report from consulting firm Arthur D. Little is throwing a cold pail of water on the long-term viability of biofuels...

London,UK -FleetOwner (USA) -Jun 20, 2007: -- Roger Hill, head of Arthur D. Little’s global energy practice stressed, “... but long-term survival of the various biofuel options is far from clear, as virtually all are dependent on government support and/or high oil prices”... Despite current government support, Hill said there are uncertainties regarding the long-term sustainability of biofuel technologies and applications, mainly as they are cost competitive only in times of high oil prices... These ambiguities, Hill said, make investors more skeptical about the potential for making long-term profits by investing in biofuels. He stressed that to make the right investment choices potential investors, suppliers and policy makers must have in-depth, independent data covering all aspects of the bio-fuels debate...

Biofuel * China - Bans ethanol production to conserve corn

While the U.S. and many other countries are racing to increase their production of corn-based ethanol, China has just placed a moratorium on the production of the biofuel.

Pork is the main meat in the Chinese diet... Here in the states, President Bush has called for the annual production of 35 billion gallons of ethanol... Critics say that would require an additional 129,000 square miles of farmland – an area the size of Kansas and Iowa combined...

Biofuel boondoggle... * USA's subsidy aids Europe’s drivers

USA -Life on the Road/csmonitor.com -12 June 2007: -- The maneuver begins with a shipload of biodiesel from, say, Malaysia, which pulls into a US port like Houston, says John Baize, an industry consultant in Falls Church, Va... Unlike domestic diesel-biodiesel blends, which typically contain from 1 to 10 percent of biodiesel, the Malaysian fuel starts off as 100 percent biodiesel, typically made from palm oil... Then, the vessel receives from a dockside diesel supplier a “splash” of US petroleum diesel. It doesn’t take much to turn it into a diesel-biodiesel blend that is eligible for US subsidies... If the ship holds roughly 9 million gallons, it takes only about 9,000 gallons of traditional diesel (0.1 percent of the total) to make the entire load eligible for the blenders tax credit... The US importer of the load applies to the Internal Revenue Service for the credit – a dollar for each of the 9 million biodiesel gallons, Mr. Baize calculates. The next day the tanker can set sail – dash – for Europe. There, the US importer resells the biodiesel, taking advantage of European fuel-tax credits that, in effect, keep biodiesel prices above US prices...

Extensive biofuels development could cost taxpayers billions over the next 15 years

Washington,DC,USA -The Washington Post -7June 2007: -- While President Bush and members of Congress push for more energy independence and environmental benefits of biofuels, little has been said about the incentives and subsidies needed, which could run to more than $140 billion over that time... The biggest single expense would be extension of the 51-cent per gallon ethanol tax credit, scheduled to expire in 2010... That would cost federal coffers an extra $131 billion through 2022 under a mandate recently approved by a Senate committee... * Heavy-Duty Engine Manufacturers Allow Biodiesel Use Without Voiding Warranties - Acknowledging the growing popularity of vegetable-based biofuels, most heavy-duty engine makers have switched their policies to authorize biodiesel mixtures of at least 5% in their engines

Most manufacturers said that using biodiesel blends they approve would not affect engine warranties, although they did say that if the fuel caused an engine breakdown, warranties would not cover it... Cummins Inc., Caterpillar Inc., Volvo Trucks North America, Mack Trucks Inc. and Detroit Diesel Corp. all said customers could safely use some level of biodiesel... The National Biodiesel Board agreed with that viewpoint... “Since engine manufacturers warranty the materials and workmanship of their engines, they do not warranty fuel of any kind,” the board said in a statement... “If there are engine problems caused by a fuel (again, whether that fuel is petrodiesel fuel or biodiesel fuel), these problems are not related to the materials or workmanship of the engine but are the responsibility of the fuel supplier and not the engine manufacturer,” the board said...

NM,USA -TTNews -April 24, 2007: -- Gov. Bill Richardson has signed a bill into law that requires all diesel fuel sold in New Mexico to be at least a 5-percent blend of biodiesel by 2012.

MO,USA -TTNews -April 24, 2007: -- The state Senate approved a bill that would require all diesel fuel sold at retail in the state to be a biodiesel blend... The bill – SB204 – would require at least 5-percent biodiesel at the pumps by April 2009. Retailers would not be forced to carry the blended product if the price is more expensive than regular diesel...

OR,USA -TTNews -April 24, 2007: -- The Oregon House also is on the biodiesel bandwagon. The chamber approved a bill that includes a requirement that at least a 2-percent biodiesel blend be offered as soon as state production of biodiesel reaches 5 million gallons per year. A 5-percent biodiesel blend would be required when production reaches 15 million gallons per year...

MON,USA -TTNews -April 24, 2007: -- A bill has died that would have required all diesel fuel sold in the state to have at least a 5-percent blend of biodiesel. The bill – SB432 – was tabled in the House Transportation Committee, effectively killing it for the year. The Senate had already approved it...

There's now proof positive bio-diesel really can be a clean-energy alternative when it comes to long-haul trucking

Winnepeg,Manitoba,Canada -CJOB - April 12 2007 : -- Manitoba Energy Minister Jim Rondeau says a pilot project with Border Chemical has demonstrated the potential... Last October, two transport trucks were sent on their way. One of them using five-percent biodiesel ran 50-thousand kilometres with temperatures reaching well below -40. There were no reported problems. There was no difference in the performance of the two trucks, only a reduction in diesel smell... The test concludes later this spring.

IA,USA -Wallace's Farmer, by Rod Swoboda -April 4, 2007: -- The test is still ongoing, but preliminary results of a 2-million mile road test of biodiesel fuel show positive benefits for Decker Truck Line Inc... The Fort Dodge-based firm is the first major trucking company to compare a B20 soy biodiesel blend to conventional diesel fuel. The "Two Million Mile Haul" has covered 350,000 miles toward its goal... A B20 biodiesel (blend of 20% biodiesel and 80% petroleum diesel) is being used in 20 company trucks that travel from Decker's Fort Dodge terminal to either Chicago or Minneapolis. All trucks have Caterpillar engines built to EPA 2004 and 2007 emissions levels...

Biodiesel * USA - Fleet testing reports success

Louisville,Ky,USA -Today's Trucking -22 Mar 2007: -- Dale Decker, a third-generation operator whose family business runs about 700 trucks and more than 1,400 trailers out of the Fort Dodge, Iowa., really really wants to believe in biodiesel. And he’s putting his money where his fuel spout is... Decker’s submitting a good chunk of his fleet to the biodiesel test. In cooperation with the National Biodiesel Board, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Iowa Central Community College, as well as the Renewable Enegery Group (REG), a biodiesel manufacturer, Decker is going to run 10 of his trucks a million miles using B-20 biodiesel (20 percent biodiesel and 80-percent No. 2 diesel) and 10 other identical trucks on identical runs but with regular fuel. And they reach the end, he’s going to determine which fuel works best -- which had the best mileage, the least maintenance problems, and the greatest driver satisfaction...
