* USA - What to do about that SSRS/UCR limbo?
USA -Land Line Magazine -Dec. 27, 2006: -- The Single State Registration System has been repealed by the U.S. Congress effective Jan. 1, 2007, and at some point during 2007, the SSRS program will be replaced by a new program. That program, called the Unified Carrier Registration Agreement, is being developed now... The SSRS was a federal registration program for interstate motor carriers authorized to transport property or passengers. Its objective was to ensure that all interstate motor carriers maintain public liability insurance at appropriate levels... Joe Shewmaker of the OOIDA Business Services Department recommends carrying the documents in your truck should it be necessary to share the information with enforcement officers who may be "out of the loop."...

* USA - What will replace the SSRS program? - Missouri DOT answers SSRS questions
USA -Land Line Magazine -Dec 29, 2006: -- Is the SSRS really going away? What will replace it? In the meantime, will I need to renew? Will I get a ticket for not having a new receipt?: Missouri Department of Transportation's Motor Carrier Services has mailed letters to Missouri-based motor carriers answering these questions and notifying them of important details regarding the demise of the Single State Registration System. The program expires Jan. 1, 2007... A new program called the Unified Carrier Registration will replace it, but that program is not in place yet. This Unified Carrier Registration program will replace SSRS. This registration program applies to both for-hire and private carriers that operate across state lines. Interstate exempt carriers, leasing companies, freight forwarders, private carriers and brokers must also register under UCR...

* USA - EOBR proposal clears White House; few details emerge
USA -Land Line Magazine -Dec. 27, 2006: -- If you're wondering if the feds are toying with the idea of mandating the so-called "black boxes" for the trucking industry, you may very well get an answer to that question before too much longer... The White House Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs has approved a "notice of proposed rulemaking" that will propose a potential new regulation governing electronic on-board recording devices for the trucking industry... The explanation released by FMCSA states: "The (proposed) rulemaking would consider the potential benefits and costs of requiring motor carriers to install and use EOBRs and evaluate alternative approaches including: 1) Mandating such practice industry-wide, 2) limiting the requirement to motor carriers with certain characteristics, and 3) allowing EOBR use to remain voluntary."...
