* USA - Trucking industry braces for change

* Sales reflect new emission rules

Detroit,Mich,USA -The Free Press, by SEAN M. WOOD -Dec 27, 2006: -- The trucking industry is not a big fan of change... The constantly changing price of fuel is a problem. The turnover rate for drivers is a problem. And now, the Environmental Protection Agency has new emission rules taking effect Jan. 1 that signify more change... These rules mean engines built after the first of the year have to meet tougher standards for the emission of soot and nitrous oxide. But the last time there was a federally mandated change in engines, truck prices went up while fuel efficiency went down... So trucking companies have been on a buying binge for the past two years, filling their fleets with trucks powered by engines built before 2007. They want to wait and see how the new engines perform before they invest... It's been great to be employed in truck building and selling. But that activity is going to stop after the first of the year while trucking companies wait for performance reports...

* USA - Need a truck? You might want to buy one now
Easton,MD,USA -American Farm -1 Jan 2007: -- New EPA standards that go into effect this month are expected to drive up the cost of medium- and heavy-duty trucks. Prices may rise by $5,000 for a medium-duty truck (Classes 3 to 7) and by $8,000 to $12,000 for a Class 8 heavy-duty truck, according to estimates by Jim Westlake, executive director of the American Truck Dealers, a division of the National Automobile Dealers Association... Engines made after Jan. 1 must comply with the new standards which require ultralow sulfur diesel, which enables the use of advanced emission controls on diesel vehicles... If you’re planning to purchase a new truck for your business any time soon, you might save by getting a 2007 truck that has an engine built before Dec. 31, 2006... Truck sales have already increased in anticipation of the change... Even used trucks will command higher prices because of increased demand...
