OPINION * USA - Dangerous Truckers Get them Off Our Roads

USA - movingoutmovingon.bloghi.com, by Susan Murphy-Milano 2 Jan 2007: -- There are thousands of bad truck drivers across America driving on our highways who got their licenses under suspicious circumstances. In the last five years, the federal government has discovered licensing fraud in 24 states. The payment-for-license schemes usually center on so-called third-party examiners who are hired by states to perform driver testing... These jackasses are on our roads and could care less who they kill making their almighty dollar... According to the Chicago Tribune a federal judge in Chicago remarked during a license fraud case several years ago, some of these truckers can be likened to "10-ton torpedoes"... You would think truck drivers, the good ones that is and the unions would do something about this dangerous trend... A hurdle facing the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the agency that oversees trucking safety, is its belief that it cannot force states to locate drivers with suspicious licenses... In contrast, the Transportation Department's Office of Inspector General thinks the agency does have that power... Jason King, a spokesman for the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, which represents state authorities across the U.S., said states do work with the federal agency to root out unqualified drivers...
