TRUCKER's STORY * USA - Home on the Highway

Driving offers travel, freedom, modern amenities

Clarksburg,WV,USA -WBOY-TV, by Paul Darst -Jan 4, 2007: -- Kevin Craft wakes up in a different part of the country most days during the week... As a long-haul truck driver, the Gallipolis Ferry resident spends much of his time on the road. There is a lot he likes about life behind the wheel... "You have a lot of freedom," Craft said. "You don't have a boss over you all the time."... Craft is an owner-operator, meaning that he has more freedom than other drivers who work directly for specific companies. But there is more to like about driving than just freedom, he said... "I like seeing the country, too," he said... Most long-haul trucks today are designed with driver comfort in mind. In addition to air ride, which smoothes out the bumps, most big rigs these days are capable of accommodating televisions, microwaves, small refrigerators and satellite radio. A lot even have automotive transmissions... The largest trucks have comfortable sleeper units, called "condos" that can sleep two people. They are a lot nicer than they used to be, Jenkins said... But the positives outweigh the negatives, Craft said... "It all comes back to the freedom," he said...
