New Delhi,India -The Economic Times, by ARUN MAIRA -Jan 8, 2007: -- Telco’s (now Tata Motors) truck assembly plant in Malaysia in the 1970s was the first foreign venture by an Indian automobile company. It had a hard time initially... Though Telco’s products were robust, India was known as the land of god-men and snake charmers, not as a manufacturer of complex, engineered products like trucks... Customers in Malaysia had many choices, including Mercedes trucks and Japanese trucks. Why would they buy an Indian truck at a higher price than a Japanese truck? Why not a Mercedes? Yet some did. And the unusual experience these few first owners had helped to sell many more Tata trucks. Soon Tata trucks had the highest market share in the country...
