Longer Truck * Canada - Manitoba OKs pilot program

Manitoba,Canada -Land Line Magazine, by David Tanner -Jan 2, 2007: -- The Canadian province of Manitoba will soon try out a program that will allow a 20-percent length increase for trucks on certain highways... The provincial government will allow Rocky Mountain doubles - an additional hitch of a 6.5-meter (21.5-foot) pup trailer behind a conventional 53-foot trailer - on a 750-kilometer (466-mile) stretch of provincial Highway 6 between Winnipeg and Thompson... Manitoba Infrastructure and Transportation authorized a year-long pilot program for eight motor carriers for economic and environmental reasons. An evaluation is due in fall 2007 to determine if the program will be extended to other carriers... Gross vehicle weights will not be increased, according to the transportation ministry, although maximum allowable length would be increased to 103 feet...
