Story - USA - Big rigs keep on rollin

Sherman/Denison,TX,USA -Sherman Denison Herald Democrat, by Edward Southerland -5 Aug 2006: -- Twenty or so years ago, Hollywood and Nashville discovered the truck driver. The men, and in some cases women, who drive the 18-wheelers laden with the myriad of items necessary for America to function, were hailed as the new cowboys, the inheritors of the tradition of individualism that broke the plains and conquered the frontier... The cowboy illusion was not particularly apt 20 years ago, and it is even less apt today. Strapped into a ergonomically designed seat, surrounded by gauges and dials and digital readouts, with a computer making critical decisions and charting courses, the truck driver is more a man in the cockpit than a man in the saddle... The next time you are on the highway, look a little closer at the big rigs rolling by. Just yesterday they were part of the world of tomorrow. Just imagine what things will be like after the next tomorrow or the day after...
