Border News - USA - Plan creates secure trucking zone

El Paso,TX,USA -El Paso Times, by Vic Kolenc -15 June 2006: -- A proposal to set up a demonstration project for a high-tech,security-enhanced and pollution-reducing truck crossing system between El Paso and Juárez took a step Wednesday toward getting the $4.5 million needed to pay for the project... The idea is to create "secure manufacturing zones," where cameras and software programs would monitor truck loading. Loads would be bar-coded and sealed. Trucks then would be equipped with high-tech vehicle locator devices and security systems so they could cross the border without customs checks. The trucks also would be converted to use clean-burning natural gas instead of diesel... (Photo Border Studies Program: Managed by Earlham College - Crossing the border looks simple enough at first glance, but BSP students find that border crossings, a daily part of life here in Juárez/ El Paso, involve a whole host of complex socio-economic issues)
