* Bush Boosts Ethanol, Hydrogen in State of the Union
USA -The Car Connection -1 Feb 2006: President Bush called on the nation to begin a transition away from oil in his State of the Union address on Tuesday night, an address which he delivered as the price of a barrel of oil hovered near $70 a barrel. "America is addicted to oil which is often imported from unstable parts of the world," the President told a joint session of Congress in which he laid out plans to diversify the nation's energy platform. * Ford Sales Rise Almost 3 Percent in January on Mid-Size Sedans
DETROIT,Mich,USA -AP, by DEE-ANN DURBIN -Feb 1, 2006: Ford Motor Co.'s U.S. sales rose 2.7 percent in January on the strength of its new lineup of mid-size sedans. Japan's Nissan Motor Co., meanwhile, reported flat sales for the month... In a survey released this week, Ford Motor Co. ranked last among major automakers in the use of its North American plant capacity. The company aims to change that with a restructuring plan being announced Monday, Jan. 23, 2006 that will include plant closings and job cuts. Already some are wondering if it will be enough to reverse the automaker's billion-dollar losses in North America...
* GM to build two hybrid SUVs in Texas
DETROIT,Mich,USA -Reuters -Feb 1, 2006: General Motors said on Wednesday it will build Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon hybrid sport-utility vehicles at its Arlington, Texas, plant in late 2007... The hybrid system is being advanced and adapted by BMW, DaimlerChrysler AG and GM for use in cars, trucks and SUVs... GM, also said it will produce the world's first light-duty integrated hybrid transmission, to be designed and built at its Baltimore, Maryland, transmission plant...
* Cadillac will get hybrid Escalade
BALTIMORE,Mar,USA -Automotive News, by Jamie LaReau & Richard Truett -Feb 1, 2006: General Motors CEO Rick Wagoner confirmed that Cadillac will get its first hybrid vehicle in the fall of 2007 with the 2008 Escalade SUV... The hybrid version of the Escalade will use a new transmission made by GM’s Allison division. The two-mode hybrid system will be similar to what GM will use in the hybrid version of a Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon SUVs...
* Honda third-quarter operating profit jumps 24 percent
TOKYO,Japan -Reuters -Jan 31, 2006: Honda Motor Co., Japan's third-biggest automaker, posted a better-than-expected 24 percent jump in quarterly operating profit on Tuesday, helped by soaring revenues and a weaker yen, and jacked up its full-year forecasts to account for currency and other one-off windfalls... Most of Japan's top automakers are expected to report strong profit gains as they ride a softer yen and expand their sales worldwide, most notably in North America at the expense of General Motors and Ford Motor Co...

* Fiat Auto reports turnaround to profit, plans bond
TURIN,Italy -Reuters -Jan 30, 2006: Fiat Auto turned in a quarterly trading profit for the first time in nearly five years as sales of its new Punto model kicked in, and the group will take advantage of the turnaround to tap debt markets... Fiat said on Monday its Auto unit swung to a trading profit of $25.4 million (21 million euros) in the fourth quarter of 2005, compared with a year-ago loss of 156 million euros adjusted to International Accounting Standards...
* Brazil to Build U.S. EcoSport
Brazil -The Car Connection (USA), by Fernando Calmon -30 Jan 2006: Ford's Brazil arm is working on a new version of its EcoSport SUV, but the new larger vehicle isn't staying at home - it's headed to the U.S.... To be engineered in Brazil, the new EcoSport will be built in Mexico. Basic development costs in Brazil are very competitive; an engineer's salary is about one-third of what is paid in more developed countries...
* Renault Sticks with Brazil
France - The Car Connection, by Fernando Calmon -30 Jan 2006: In spite of excess capacity and continuing losses here, it clearly seems that Renault will choose to concentrate efforts in countries like Brazil, leaving China, the world's second market, in waiting mode... Things seem to be seized in China, where Renault has settled in 2002, but no car has been produced so far. The expectations are, in addition to push Renault in Brazil, to go for expansion in India, a more predictable and less risky market in relation to Chinese operations...
* Opel sees weak German car market in January
BOCHUM, Germany -Reuters -Feb 1, 2006: New car sales in Germany, Europe's biggest auto market, did not not get off to a strong start in 2006. "January did not go so well"... * Suzuki Motor Q3 operating profit up 5.5% as sales rise
TOKYO,Japan -Reuters -Feb 1, 2006: Japanese compact car maker Suzuki Motor Corp. posted a 5.5 percent rise in quarterly operating profit on brisk vehicle sales worldwide, data showed on Wednesday, and it reiterated its forecast for a slight improvement in full-year earnings...
