Behind recalls - USA - Risk side to shared systems for cars

Massive safety recall highlights drawbacks

Chicago,ILL,USA - ChicagoTribune, by By Rick Popely and Jim Mateja -Sept 9, 2005: -- As auto manufacturers share parts and designs across more vehicles, they run greater risks of having safety recalls that cover millions of vehicles, such as the one Ford Motor Co. announced Wednesday... "Manufacturers are sharing drivetrain components and platforms among several different models, so when you do a recall now, it will affect a lot more vehicles," spokesman Rae Tyson of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said. That is a key reason the industry recalled a record 30.6 million vehicles last year, 6 million more than the previous record set in 2000... Ford recalled 3.8 million pickups and sport-utility vehicles that use the same cruise control system, which is suspected of causing hundreds of fires... The same day, Toyota recalled 978,000 pickups and SUVs for a steering part that could break... General Motors recalled 947,000 similar midsize SUVs... The Chrysler Group recalled 955,000 Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouth mini-vans... Kevin Mixer, automotive research director at AMR in Detroit, a technology research company, says the industry's move to share platforms and parts on multiple models, a cost-cutting effort, means there could be more mega-recalls like the ones announced this week...
