TRUCKING MARKET * USA: To stay in moderate range

* Indiana - U.S. freight market will continue to improve

--- FTR remains confident in this year’s freight market, despite a March drop in its Trucking Conditions Index (TCI) that measures freight volumes, rates, capacity, fleet bankruptcies, fuel prices and financing. Spot rates are improving, and that indicates a market-wide move to tighter capacity, the analysts add... Says Jonathan Starks, Chief Operating Officer, “Trucking conditions are likely to stay in this moderate range until late this year when the Electronic Logging Device (ELD) mandate comes into effect. Once you combine the productivity hit coming from full implementation of ELDs with continued freight growth and the capacity reductions that have already occurred, you get a market that is poised to see significant movement in rates” ... And spot market prices are up 5% over last year, he notes, referring to findings in Truckstop.com’s Market Demand Index...

TRUCKING MARKET * China: "...2.3 million certified trucks and five million daily commodity transport demands"

* Guizhou - IFC to invest $20M in truck logistics start-up Huochebang

--- International Finance Corporation, a member of the World Bank Group, is to invest as much as US$20 million in Huochebang, a Uber-like Chinese truck logistics start-up, according to media reports citing insiders... Founded in 2014, Huochebang, which is a Chinese phrase meaning "truck gangs", helps truck drivers find commodities to transport and vacant parking lots, facilitates truck sales and used truck auctions, as well as provides other related services to trucking businesses in China... Logistics expenses take up 16% of China's GDP, about twice the level in the U.S. and Europe, because 85% of China's large-size trucks are operated by individuals and have a 40% non-load ratio, according to information posted on Huochebang's website... Huochebang currently has 2.3 million certified trucks and five million daily commodity transport demands, with 1,000 service centers around China. It aims to help improve efficiency in China's truck logistics sector... Another similar start-up, Yunmanman, raised venture funding worth hundreds of millions RMB in 2015 led by Yunfeng Capital, co-founded by Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.'s executive chairman Jack Ma...

TRUCK FREIGHT * USA: Increased 3.5% this year

* Florida - Earnings turmoil deepens at railroads as trucks poach freight

--- Railroads lost cargo to trucks in the third quarter, adding to a yearlong slide in profits as demand tumbled for coal, oil and metals... Intermodal cargo, goods hauled in containers, fell a second consecutive quarter for the first time since 2009, according to the Association of American Railroads, an industry trade group. A surplus of trucks has pushed down freight rates and lower diesel prices have chipped away at rail’s usual fuel-savings advantage, taking a toll on once-steady growth... Meanwhile, truck freight has increased 3.5% this year through August, according to the railroads association...

TRUCKING MARKET * USA: The end of an economic downturn ?

* Nevada - Truck numbers bottoming out, but has the economy?

--- Several indicators suggest that the U.S. trucking industry is approaching the end of an economic downturn. But broader economic growth is still being slowed by uncertainty around the U.S. election -- and the global rise in populism, nationalism and isolationism, a leading U.S. economist says... “There is this uncertainty about policy and where we’re going,” said Diane Swonk, in a presentation at the American Trucking Associations’ Management Conference and Exhibition. “It’s not just the U.S. it’s global in scope” ... Any sense of isolationism is certainly troubling in the context of cross-border truck traffic. Trucks haul 70% of the surface trade between Canada and the U.S., and since 1995 truck-transported shipments from Canada have grown 65%, with Canada-bound freight up 93%, said Bob Costello, chief economist for the American Trucking Associations. The numbers for shipments across the border with Mexico are even more dramatic. Trucks haul 83% of the surface trade there, while U.S. bound shipments were up 395% and Mexican-bound shipments surged 355% in the same period since 1995... Looking at recent years, the trucking industry’s economic story has not been one of growth...

TRUCKING PRICES * France - General decline in 2nd Q 2016

* Paris - Slight rebound in some sectors

--- The price index of freight released by the Ministry revealed a decline for all modes of transport in Q2 2016, compared to the same period of 2015. The change compared to the 1st quarter however shows a progression for road and sea... No major increase in view of the price of transportation . Year on year, the indices are trending down, whatever the mode, show the cargo price indices and warehousing published by the statistical service of the Ministry... The most spectacular falls back to the overseas: air cargo transport prices as maritime decline of 6.4% in Q2 2016 compared to the same period in 2015... As for land modes, the river also shows a significant decline (- 2.6%), when the rail and road limit their respective erosion - 1.9% - 1.1%. Prices for mail and express freight, finally, decrease of 0.8%... Looking at price developments of the second quarter compared to the first three months of the year , three sectors were up: the sea (+ 1.2%), road (+ 0.7%), and modestly express-mail (+ 0.2%). Not enough to achieve a lasting upward trend, however...

TRUCKING MARKET * Russia: Bankruptcies, consolidations, mergers'

* Russia - Shippers face less trucking options as industry consolidates
--- Trucking firms in Russia are consolidating and expanding their services in a bid to survive the country’s stagnant economy and remain competitive with containerized rail transportation... Consolidation is most directly impacting small- and medium-sized Russian trucking companies with fleets of up to 50 trucks that make up nearly 90 percent of Russia’s trucking capacity. Large trucking operations with 100 tractors or more make up 10 percent of the market... As the deteriorating market hit shippers, they sought to cut costs wherever possible, putting strain on Russian truckers and transportation firms, according to an official spokesperson of Russia’s Minister of Transport Maxim Sokolov. In addition to smaller companies, consolidation is also disproportionately impacting niche carriers, the ministry said... Several trucking companies that specialize in containerized cargo have had to declare bankruptcy since the beginning of the year. Among them are Gruzovozoff, Avtotrading and Michailovskaya Transport Company, which which have 15 trucks to 17 trucks in their fleet and a similar number of drivers... The current financial uncertainty in Russia and poor business climate were the major reasons for Michailovskaya Transport Company’s bankruptcy, according to to Leonid Rodimov, the company’s general director. The company is considering several options to remain operational, including some type of merger, Rodimov said... Representatives of the other companies that are currently the subject of bankruptcy proceedings declined to comment, however, it is possible they may be sold to unnamed, larger competitors, according to some sources close to the companies... Among the largest players in Russia’s trucking industry are Delovy Lines, Garant-Container and SoyzHimTransAvto... The biggest merger to take place recently was sealed at the end of 2015 when the large Russian trucking company BigAvtoTrans acquired competitor Abi Product for an undisclosed sum, expanding BigAvtoTrans’ fleet by 80 trucks... In addition to competing on costs, Russian trucking companies are now expanding their value-added services, introducing door-to-door delivery and allowing for deferred payments. Many carriers have also revised their pricing policies with the aim of making them more flexible... The leading Russian trucking companies Ratek, Energia and Lorri are some of those that have taken this approach... Shippers operating in the Russian market have a growing appetite for comprehensive logistics services and demand is also growing for expedited delivery and warehousing services, according to the Ministry of Transport...

NAFTA TRUCKING MARKET * North America

* DC - Cross-border freight posts 7.2% annual decline

-- All five major transportation modes, including trucking, carried less freight between the U.S. and its neighbors of Canada and Mexico last year than in 2014, but big-rigs continue to dominate such cargo movements, according to new U.S. Transportation Department figures... Trucks carried 64.3% of so-called U.S.-NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) freight last year, a 4.4 percentage point increase from 2014, and continued to be the most heavily used mode for moving goods to and from both U.S.-NAFTA partners. Trucks accounted for $359.8 billion of the $589.9 billion of imports, or 61%, and for $351.9 billion of the $516.4 billion of exports, or 68.2%... From 2014 to 2015, the value of U.S.-Canada freight flows fell 12.6% to $575.2 billion... The top commodity category transported between the U.S. and Canada in 2015 was vehicles and vehicle parts (other than railway vehicles and parts), valued at $103 billion with 60% moved by truck... Mexican freight down just slightly. The top commodity transported between the U.S. and Mexico in 2015 was electrical machinery at $103.8 billion, an increase of 7.5% from 2014, with $95.4 billion or 91.9% moved by trucks...

TRUCKING MARKET * USA: Small operators troubles

* New York - Trucking makes a comeback, but small operators miss out

-- A recovering U.S. economy is driving record demand for trucking. But many smaller operators, who make up the vast majority of the roughly 470,000 for-hire fleets on the road today, say they’re missing out on the boom... New regulations, including rules capping emissions and limiting drivers’ hours on the road, are adding to truckers’ expenses... Many business owners who started their companies in the 1980s, when the industry was deregulated, are planning to retire in light of the new challenges. Gary Hanke, 64, said he wasn’t able to expand his company, Pegasus Transportation Inc., quickly enough to meet strong demand for his trucks in recent years. Approaching retirement age, he sold Pegasus to CRST International Inc. in March. Since then, Pegasus’s fleet has expanded to 300 trucks, from 235 before, helped by CRST’s scale and ability to operate nationwide...

TRUCKING MARKET * USA: Freight growth pushes trucking conditions to 2015 high

* DC - Freight report for July: Trucking conditions hit 2015 high mark

-- DOT reports freight uptick in July: The amount of freight carried by for-hire transporters in July, per the DOT’s monthly Freight Transportation Services Index, rose six-tenths of a percent in July. The amount of freight moved in March, April, May and June was also upwardly revised. The Index in the month was just half a percent shy of it’s all-time high reached last November... Truck and rail freight led the index’s reading, which encompasses all modes of transportation, including air, pipeline and water, in addition to truck and rail. Compared to last July, freight movement was up 1.4 percent. Year-to-date in July (compared to the end of 2014), the index is up 0.2 percent... Conditions for trucking companies, as measured by FTR’s monthly Trucking Conditions Index, rose to their highest point of the year in July, FTR reported this week... Upward revisions to first and second quarter freight growth, however, have driven the index upward as well. Better than expected freight growth and a “stronger freight forecast,” says FTR, were key factors in the index’s July gains. FTR says it expects the TCI to continue to trend higher in 2015’s remaining months, signaling better conditions for carriers...

TRUCK FREIGHT DEMAND * USA: Surges at fastest rate since November 2013

* Virginia - ATA: "Economy sent its shipping index to the second-highest level ever recorded"

-- Trucking activity rose to its second-highest level on record in July, as a strengthening economy increased the amount of freight on the road... The amount of cargo hauled by U.S. truckers rose 2.8% in the latest reading of the American Trucking Associations’ monthly index. It was the biggest monthly gain since November 2013, the industry group said. The index is based off of surveys of the group’s members... The ATA pointed to improved retail sales, factory output and housing starts, all of which raised demand for freight transportation. The relatively robust domestic economy has shielded U.S. truckers from headwinds that have rattled other carriers... Carriers have had an up and down year since the ATA’s index hit a record high in January. The U.S. economy has moved in fits and starts, leading to inconsistent demand for hauling freight. In July a key manufacturing reading fell to a three-month low and the Cass Freight Index, which tracks all types of cargo shipments, dipped 1.6% from June... The ATA sounded a note of caution, warning that high levels of inventories could hurt freight volumes in the next few months. The inventory-to-sales ratio for all businesses has reached its highest this year since the 2008-2009 recession, according to U.S. Census Bureau figures... Bob Costello, chief economist at the ATA said: Still, any downturn is likely to be short-lived. Trucking is entering its busy season in the run-up to the start of the school year and the holidays...

TRUCKING MARKET * USA: General freight trucking y/y more than 24,8%

* North Carolina - The 10 fastest-growing industries in small business

-- Trucking companies and building contractors dominate the fastest-growing industries for small businesses, according to new data from Sageworks, a financial information company... General freight trucking companies have posted, on average, nearly 25% sales growth for the 12 months ended May 31, based on Sageworks' financial statement analysis of businesses with less than $5 million in annual revenue. Specialty freight trucking companies, which includes tankers and refrigerated trucks, increased sales by 16%, on average, or nearly double the growth rate for small businesses across all industries... “A lot of the growth in trucking initially after the recession was related to oil and oil production, but even as some of the production has tapered down and oil prices have dropped, growth among small businesses in the industry still remains high,” said Sageworks analyst Chuck Nwokocha...

TRUCKING MARKET * USA:

* Virginia - Annual US trucking revenue tops $700 billion for first time

-- U.S.A. trucking companies of all types generated a combined $700.4 billion in revenue last year, fueled by economic growth that led to higher freight demand and higher rates... As an industry, trucking broke past the $700 billion revenue mark in the U.S. for the first time, the American Trucking Associations said in a report released May 11... Trucking revenue rose about 3 percent from nearly $682 billion in 2013 and was up 9 percent from $642 billion in 2012, data from ATA American Trucking Trends reports show... Although ATA attributed much of the increase to increased freight volumes, shippers paid higher rates for trucking services across-the-board last year, feeding truck revenue... The ATA report includes both for-hire carriers, largely truckload and less-than-truckload operators, and private truck fleets operated by shippers such as Wal-mart Stores... However, that 83.4 reading indicated capacity at large truckload carriers is still about 17 percent lower than in the fourth quarter of 2006, the pre-recession capacity peak... Trucking has more than recovered the revenue it lost during the recession, but it will take a much stronger economy to bring truck capacity levels back to their previous peak...

TRUCKING MARKET * USA: Transfix's

* New York - Brings the Uber Model to the $800 Billion Trucking Industry

NY,USA -Re Code, by Liz Gannes -January 20, 2015: ... The trucking industry have historically run their operations was terribly inefficient. It generally takes three hours of calling around and faxing orders to set up every shipment, according to Drew McElroy. And it doesn’t work that well: Some 20 billion miles per year in the U.S.A. are driven by empty trucks... I know what you’re thinking. There should be an Uber for trucking. And in fact, there are: DashHaul, CargoMatic, Keychain Logistics. But perhaps who better than McElroy, a 32-year-old native of the industry, to take the idea on... McElroy has now founded a New York City-based startup called Transfix, which has a smartphone app that matches shipments with drivers. The aim is to remove the need for businesses like his family’s, while taking a slightly smaller cut of transactions than the norm — generally 10 percent. “My family’s little business was not going to be the platform for taking over the world,” McElroy said... Transfix is already being tested by Barnes and Noble, Samsung, SuperValu and J.Crew, and cutting their “deadhead” runs (time driving without cargo) in half or more, according to McElroy. Last year the company received $1.8 million in funding from Bowery Capital, Lerer Hippeau, Founder Collective, TriplePoint Capital and others... Tranfix fits into the larger phenomenon of consumer technology being extended into enormous existing industries. Annual American trucking spending is estimated at $600 billion. It’s been surprisingly easy to break into the market, McElroy said, because large retailers and brands are increasingly willing to work with startups — and because some 90 percent of truck drivers already have smartphones...

TRUCKING INDUSTRY NEWS * Europe

* Turkey - Operational leasing set to increase in

(Image by Jenna Krajeski: Trucks wait in Turkey to cross into Iraq)
Istambul,Turkey -Fleet Europe, by Tim Harrup -26 July 2013: -- A new report by consultants Frost  and Sullivan shows that operational leasing is rapidly taking hold in the Turkish market. The company’s ‘Strategic Analysis of the Turkish Fleet Leasing Market’ predicts that sales to operational leasing companies, which were at 69,000 last year, will almost double to 123,000 by 2018. According to Frost and Sullivan’s transport analyst Hikmet çakmak, it is a combination of the ‘service’ benefits of operational leasing, and higher vehicle taxes, which is pushing fleet buyers in this direction. As in other parts of Europe, the leasing industry is also trying to reach out to SME’s with its products, which will give a further boost to the operational leasing segment. However, Hikmet çakmak also points out that there is a lack of legislation in this domain in turkey, which needs to be addressed. Restrictions on leasing LCV’s are an example of one of the problems...

TRUCKING MARKETS: How Big is the Trucking Industry? * USA

* Texas - Statistics About Truck Driving

(Photo)
Fort Worth,TX,USA- C1GuestBlog -March 21, 2013: -- The trucking industry is a huge sector of the American economy, but often doesn’t get the recognition or respect it deserves... But how big is the trucking industry, exactly?: In 2011, the trucking industry raked in an astounding amount of revenue — $603.9 billion in freight. That’s more than 80 percent of all freight revenue (including air, rail, water, etc). The trucking industry is quite literally what keeps our economy running smoothly... To give you an idea of how much of our nation’s product is actually shipped through truck…

* $118,832,000 (82.7%) of agricultural products
* Over 92% of prepared foods including dairy products and fruit, vegetables, and nut products
* $501,445,000 (65%) of pharmaceutical products
* $168,913,000 (91.9%) of lumber and wood products

* Employment in the Trucking Industry: Nine million people are employed in the trucking industry — that’s one out of 13 people (who have jobs). Of those 9 million, about 3.5 million are professional truck drivers. Nine million people in the industry, 3.5 million drivers, and there’s still a shortage of truckers. Estimates show that the current shortage of 20,000 drivers could increase to 111,000 by 2014 if market conditions don’t improve...

* Trucks on the Road: There are 2 million registered tractor trailers in the United States alone. On average, those trucks consume about 37.2 billion gallons of diesel a year. Those trucks on the road deliver 70 percent of all freight in the country. The American Trucking Association estimates that in about a decade, the demand for trucking services will rise by 30 percent. To accommodate for the rise in demand, the amount of heavy trucks on the road will rise by 20 percent, putting an additional 600,000 tractor trailers on the nation’s highways... As you can see, we’d be in a pretty big bind of trucks stopped moving...

* Ohio - Trucking industry continues smooth ride in February

(Photo: Delivery trucks loading into sand movers)
Dayton,OH,USA -The Dayton Business Journal, by Joe Cogliano -Mar 25, 2013: -- The trucking industry continues to gain speed... The American Trucking Associations’ advanced seasonally adjusted For-Hire Truck Tonnage Index rose 0.6 percent in February, marking the fourth consecutive month of increases. That hasn’t happened since late 2011... Kevin Burch the president of the Dayton-based Jet Express Inc., a truckload carrier, said the latest report could be a sign an upturn better news might be coming for the overall economy... Burch cited a combination of factors that played into four consecutive months of tonnage increases including:
• Companies are keeping a much better control on inventories. When warehouses have inventories that get depleted, truck tonnage naturally increases;
• Many companies were worried and to some degree still are with the effects of the “Fiscal Cliff” issues. Orders were probably delayed;
• The “feel good”effect that consumers have with respect to their 401K’s and personal stock portfolios are having a good effect on tonnage increases; and
• The housing market has improved and tonnage moves in the same direction.

The ATA says trucking serves as a barometer of the U.S. economy, representing 67 percent of tonnage carried by all modes of domestic freight transportation, including manufactured and retail goods... Trucks hauled 9.2 billion tons of freight in 2011...

* UK - Consumers value transport sector

London,EN,UK -HGVUK -November 5, 2012: -- With an overwhelming 96% of consumers agreeing that the road transport sector is important to the UK economy, continuing to improve safety and skills within the sector is of paramount importance... According to a recent survey on behalf of the Commercial Vehicle Forum 2012, road safety is still a significant concern to the general public. When asked specifically what dangers commercial vehicles posed, the majority of respondents (29%) were deeply concerned with the perceived poor driving ability of foreign truck drivers... Other concerns were excessive speed (17%) and poor driving or lack of awareness from truck drivers in general (16%). The same question posed to transport industry professionals again confirmed fears of driving standards among foreign drivers (40%) while a lack of awareness from other road users was the greatest danger for 33% of respondents... The survey went on to ask which other road user groups caused trepidation, with consumers expressing concern about motorbikes and cyclists (19% and 11% respectively) and those within the transport sector troubled by cyclists (30%) and pedestrians (24%)...

TRUCKING MARKETS * BRIC - Watch Out for the BRIC in the Road

The truck industry is going global

TENN,USA -B4T -June 2011: -- For American OEMs, there’s a big bump in the road to the future, and it’s spelled BRIC. BRIC stands for Brazil-Russia-India-China, the world’s fast-growing over-sized economies. They’re an opportunity… and a threat. They can buy our American-made trucks and engines and parts, or they can sell us their own... There was a time when the countries of Asia, Africa and South America could all be lumped together as “emerging markets” like a bin for miscellaneous parts. No more. China is the world’s second biggest economy (in case you hadn’t heard). India’s economy has now passed Russia and Canada. The buying power of the four second-tier economies is tremendous; half of all world truck sales occur in the BRIC countries... The truck manufacturers of the BRIC countries have grown fast. China and India have the strongest and most flexible lines. They dominate sales in their own countries and vigorously export to emerging markets elsewhere. Moreover, they are no longer content to remain “third world” manufacturers. The two largest Indian companies, Tati and AMW (Asian Motor Works) have programs in place to penetrate the Triad countries. Mumbai-based Mahindra Autoworks is in its third year of selling pickups in the United States... The response of American OEMs has been uneven. Daimler Trucks of North America (DTNA) exports through its Freightliner brand to Central and South America as well as Australia and New Zealand. DTNA’s Western Star trucks exports to Africa and Indonesia. Navistar at least has a joint venture with India’s Mahindra Group to manufacture heavy-duty trucks in that country. On the other hand, the two truck giants of the Western Hemisphere, Paccar’s Peterbilt and Kenworth, are strangely inactive outside of North America... American-made trucks are still the kings of the highway. Right now Peterbilt and Kenworth and Navistar can drive around that BRIC in the road. But next year it will still be in place, only bigger. Sooner or later, a time will come when the brick turns into a boulder. We repeat, what then?...

It shows that the turnover increased by an average of 7.7% compared to 2009, but this increase did not bring this value only slightly above the figures obtained in 2007...  These are not the largest companies that have increased the most, but companies 'second hat' (turnover between 2 and 4 billion EUR)...  Profitability, for against, remained under pressure in 2010, and profit margins have not recovered their 2007 level. Surcharges and higher rates more than offset those increases. Profit improves...   And investors take notice by buying up shares.  In the past year, the Dow Jones U.S. Trucking Index has actually outpaced the S&P 500 with a 26% rally in the face of these nosebleed diesel prices. The S&P benchmark has gained 21%... And if the economic recovery continues to take hold, any relief at the pump could mean more bottom-line improvements for companies that use trucks to distribute goods across the country...
