"UBER for trucks" * China

* Guizhou - To begin freight train trucking services

--- Truck Alliance, a Chinese company providing a Uber-type service for trucks, partnered with a leading railway logistics firm on Thursday to enable freight train trucking operations... Truck Alliance's partner, Shenhua Railway Freight Corporation, is a subsidiary of top coal producer Shenhua Group. It owns 2,155 kilometers of railway, 40 ships, and three ports handling 270 million tonnes of freight... The first route to pilot freight train trucking will begin in a logistics park in Erdos, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, and run 1,000 kilometers eastward to end at the port of Huanghua in Hebei Province. Operations will begin this year...

TRUCKS POLLUTION * China

* Tianjin - Beijing's battle against pollution takes toll on truck drivers at coal port

--- On a recent visit to the area around Tianjin Port Co Ltd, there were more than one hundred empty trucks parked at the coal storage center run by Ningdong Logistic Co. ... Once one of the busiest places close to Tianjin's sprawling port, the storage facility was now silent as activity had ground to a halt after the port operator last month announced a ban on trucking in coal or storing it there. The announcement was sooner than expected... It is a sign that Beijing's years-long war on pollution is disrupting the logistics of the market for coal - one of China's crucial commodities - as well as the lives of what trucking industry insiders estimate are 60,000 drivers who carry coal to and from the port... The central government has said it may extend the measure to ports in heavily industrialized Hebei province by September as it tries to combat choking pollution that often blankets the north of the country, including nearby Beijing...

A TRILLION DOLLAR MARKET: TRUCKING * China

* Guizhou - Rivals compete to make trucking logistics more efficient 
--- Huochebang, aka Truck Alliance, is a Unicorn private company which is valued at US$1 billion or more. They received another $156 million in funding in a round led by Baidu. At the end of 2016 they had received $115 million in funding... Dai Wenjian, Huochebang’s founder, told a Beijing forum last month the company has connected some 2.6 million trucks with around 400,000 logistic companies in China, and is set to deliver a profit in 2017... The latest investment comes at a time when Baidu is gearing up to rebuilt itself as an artificial intelligence(AI)-focused company, and transportation is seen by it as a key future earner... Trucking remains by far the primary means of ferrying goods across China. More than 80 percent of goods are delivered via roads in a country whose logistics sector was worth $1.6 trillion in 2013, Deloitte has estimated. But the industry remains fragmented and inefficient... Huochebang competes against 200 rival applications trying to minimize the amount of time that cargo-haulers stand empty, a rate that currently hovers around 40 percent, according to Industrial Securities Co. ... They want to match the country’s 20 million trucks with commodities in need of transport, vacant parking lots and service centers it operates. That’s essential because more than 90 percent of the nation’s road haulers are owned by individuals... Unlike Uber, which takes a cut from every ride, Huochebang makes money primarily from selling toll cards, taking a cut from the card top-ups, and helping truckers with financing...

TRUCKS BORDER CROSSING * Thailand: Alloweds with "temporary admission document"

* Bangkok - Govt okays cargo truck border deal

 --- The cabinet approved the Greater Mekong Sub-region Cross-Border Transport Agreement (GMS CBTA) on Tuesday, which grants all members a quota of 500 cargo trucks to cross a border to another country... Once approved, the pact must be put into action within 12 months, he said. Under the terms of the deal, cargo trucks from Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia and China will be able to cross borders... Under the terms of the deal, cargo trucks from Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, Cambodia and China will be able to cross borders into other member countries using a so-called "temporary admission document"...

COURIERS' HARD WORK * China - University survey: Cause, low-paying and difficulties

* Beijing - For Couriers, China’s e-commerce boom can be a tough road

 --- Zhang Heng it's one of the legions of package couriers in Beijing who help power China’s online shopping boom. He spoke as he blitzed through a surgical wing, medical storeroom and patient ward delivering parcels small and large, soft and square, to doctors and nurses in an effort to ensure the right person gets the right package... The Chinese e-commerce industry has been built on the backs of couriers — called kuaidi, or express delivery, in China — like Mr. Zhang. They number 1.2 million, by one survey, and online retailers like Alibaba use them to zip packages to customers by scooter or three-wheeled electric cart. Across China, the world’s largest market for package delivery, a courier shouting “kuaidi!” through a door or a phone signals your package has arrived... But for the couriers — who are largely unskilled workers from China’s interior — the work can be low-paying and difficult. It is coming under scrutiny from labor activists and legal experts who say many couriers face punishing hours and harsh working conditions... Nearly one-quarter of them work more than 12 hours a day, seven days a week, according to the survey, which covered 40,000 couriers and was conducted by Beijing Jiaotong University and Alibaba’s research and logistics arms. A majority work more than eight hours a day each day of the week...

Labor standards in the industry vary widely, but many couriers work under arrangements that might, for example, provide no overtime pay or no employer contributions to their government health care and pension benefits. Just as in the United States, where Uber drivers and many others work as contractors, those arrangements raise questions about what defines work and employment... Meanwhile, tough conditions have led to unrest among couriers, said Keegan Elmer, a researcher for China Labor Bulletin, a workers’ rights group based in Hong Kong. His group has seen disputes in a number of Chinese cities, he said, along with a rise in strikes as economic growth slows... In December, a weeklong strike brought deliveries by one package company partly owned by Alibaba, YTO Express, to a halt in Baoji, a city in Shaanxi Province... A spokeswoman for YTO Express said the strike was caused by a franchisee who did not promptly calculate fees or properly communicate with couriers...

* Guizhou - IFC to invest $20M in truck logistics start-up Huochebang

--- International Finance Corporation, a member of the World Bank Group, is to invest as much as US$20 million in Huochebang, a Uber-like Chinese truck logistics start-up, according to media reports citing insiders... Founded in 2014, Huochebang, which is a Chinese phrase meaning "truck gangs", helps truck drivers find commodities to transport and vacant parking lots, facilitates truck sales and used truck auctions, as well as provides other related services to trucking businesses in China... Logistics expenses take up 16% of China's GDP, about twice the level in the U.S. and Europe, because 85% of China's large-size trucks are operated by individuals and have a 40% non-load ratio, according to information posted on Huochebang's website... Huochebang currently has 2.3 million certified trucks and five million daily commodity transport demands, with 1,000 service centers around China. It aims to help improve efficiency in China's truck logistics sector... Another similar start-up, Yunmanman, raised venture funding worth hundreds of millions RMB in 2015 led by Yunfeng Capital, co-founded by Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.'s executive chairman Jack Ma...

TRUCKER´S SKILL * China - He's in a tight spot !!!

* Trucker shows off his skills threading his truck through a tough spot

 --- A trucker showed off his prodigious skills recently by threading his rig through a tight gap in a busy neighborhood in an unidentified Chinese city... Shot from a high balcony somewhere in China, it shows a cab over Scania hauling a multi-modal trailer stuck in a very narrow gap–just wide enough for the trailer to pass through–between two buildings... For about three minutes, the trucker attempts to get his rig out on to a main street without damaging the surrounding buildings or getting hit by cross traffic. As he performs his 72-point turn, backing in and out of the tiny gap, helpful passersby spot for him, guiding him through and covering his blind spots. Eventually, miraculously, the driver gets the truck unstuck without damage to himself or surrounding buildings and goes on his merry way... How did he get in this predicament? Why was he driving an 18-wheeler in a dense residential neighborhood in the first place? Is he some kind of truck driving god who has come to teach all of us how to parallel park and absolve us of all our driving sins? No one knows for sure. There's no information in the video's description, and precious little to go by in the video itself. All we can do is bask in the glory of this amazing feat of driving and rest assured that this driver is out there, somewhere, doing his thing and being amazing...

EXPRESS DELIVERY * China - Steady growth

* Beijing - China's courier businesses' revenue was over U$S 44.6 billion in the first ten months of 2016

--- China's courier sector posted steady growth for the first ten months of the year thanks to continued efforts to boost consumption and services, the State Post Bureau (SPB) said on Monday... Courier businesses' revenue was over 308 billion yuan (about 44.6 billion U.S. dollars) in the first ten months of 2016, up 44.5 percent year on year, the bureau said... A total of 24.1 billion deliveries were made during the same period, up 54.2 percent year on year, the bureau said... According to the SPB data, 20.65 billion parcels were delivered in 2015, up 48 percent from 2014... Courier services covered 70 percent of towns and villages by the end of 2015. The country has plans to extend this network farther, and improve technology, services and international connections by 2020, according to the SPB... The target annual revenue of the courier sector will be 800 billion yuan by 2020, according to a policy document released by the State Council last October...

--- A logistics company tied to China’s booming online-shopping industry is set to raise up to $1.3 billion in what could be the biggest U.S. initial public offering this year... ZTO Express, which delivers parcels for businesses including Chinese e-commerce giants Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. and JD.com Inc., said late Friday it will sell 72.1 million shares at $16.50 to $18.50 each... Founded in 2009 by a 15-year veteran of China’s logistics industry, ZTO operates a fleet of more than 3,300 trucks that deliver across China. Its main business is delivering parcels for Alibaba, which accounted for 75% of its business during the first half of this year. ZTO’s backers include Hillhouse Capital Group and Warburg Pincus LLC. ...

China Post Group Corporation * China: Profits, increase of 12.6 percent

* Beijing - China Post delivers top profits for 2nd straight year

--- China's state-owned mail service operator has outperformed its global counterparts in profits for two years in a row... The China Post Group Corporation raked in over 32 billion yuan (4.8 billion U.S. dollars) in profits in 2015 with a year-on-year increase of 12.6 percent... Its revenues gained 8.1 percent to reach 437.6 billion yuan, second in the world... China is home to the world's fastest growing postal market, with postal and delivery services leading the growth in the service sector, said Ma Junsheng, head of the State Post Bureau... China has achieved solid progress in re-balancing its economic structure from manufacturing and investment to services and consumption, with the service sector growing 7.5 percent in the first half of the year, accounting for 54.1 percent of the overall economy...

* Shanghai - Could natural gas-powered trucks be an answer to China's smog problem?

... In China, which is notorious for its thick smog, the liquefied natural gas (LNG) revolution is gathering pace, with some truck drivers keen advocates because of its cost saving benefits... "Since we started using LNG trucks, I would say the cost saving has been around 30 percent," truck driver Jia Yu Jun told CNBC's Sustainable Energy. "Say we drive about 15,000 kilometers a month – we save more than 100,000 yuan ($15,000) a year," he added... Private energy company ENN has helped to build China's national LNG infrastructure, including refueling stations. The environmental benefit of LNG is just as important as its cost... ENN's Wang Feng Shen sees huge potential for LNG vehicles. "At the moment there are 5.5 million heavy trucks in China, and 1.2 million buses," he said, "Now, we only have 200,000 vehicles [using LNG] so the market share is less than 3 percent. It could increase 30 fold in the future" ...

--- China has taken a major step towards establishing a speedy new "Silk Road" to Europe by signing up to a UN trucking treaty... Fifteen years after joining the World Trade Organization (WTO), China is hoping a revival of its ancient trading corridor to the west will help boost its slowing economy... Becoming a member of TIR, an international guarantee scheme that will enable Chinese freight containers to travel all the way to Ireland without being opened up for time-consuming customs checks, is a first step towards putting the legal framework of the plan into action... China's new Silk Road to Europe includes countries in Central Asia as well as Russia and Turkey, and potential maritime links to the Gulf and East Africa... Less than 10 per cent of Chinese exports to the European Union go by road, with most transported by sea or air...

Trucks stacked together ... or ... HOW TO AVOID TOLL FEEDS ? * China

* Shanxi - Man fined for driving 3 trucks stacked together down freeway


--- In a stunt that gives new meaning to the phrase traffic pile-up, a Chinese man has been fined for driving three trucks stacked together down a freeway, state broadcaster CCTV reported... Not amused, officers of the Chinese highway patrol in the northern province of Shanxi pulled over the unidentified driver and handed him a ticket for overloading his vehicle... According to CCTV, the driver came up with the scheme to avoid the exorbitant cost of transporting three trucks... However, his plan didn't work out too well. In addition to a $30 (200 yuan) fine and a one-point penalty on his driving license, he was ordered to ship the trucks individually to their destination... China is no stranger to "creative" solutions to shipping large vehicles... Last November, two small trucks were found loaded with two smaller trucks on the top on a highway in Anhui province. The driver ended up being fined for violating the weight and height limit for highway vehicles...

* New Brunswick - Nfld budget hits trucks with spikes for diesel, HST, permits

--- The Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association says Newfoundland & Labrador’s new provincial budget will hit hard with its five-cents per litre diesel tax jump combined with a 2% harmonized sales tax increase that will now affect vehicle insurance premiums on top of new fee spikes for licences and permits... Jean-Marc Picard, executive director of the Atlantic Provinces Trucking Association, said, “The trucking industry is going to feel the effects of these costs increase for a long time and likely puts some companies at risk of shutting down” ... The HST increase kicks in July 1 when it will move from 13 to 15%...

-- In early April in northern Vietnam, cargo trucks fully loaded with fertilizer, building materials and rice, among other things, constantly flowed back and forth along the Noi Bai-Lao Cai expressway connecting Vietnam's capital Hanoi and the border province with China... The newly-constructed expressway facilitated increasing trade exchanges between China and Vietnam, and boosted economic vitality in Vietnam's northern region... In September 2014, Vietnam's longest and most modernized expressway at 245 kilometers in length, connecting Noi Bai in Hanoi and northwestern Lao Cai province bordering China, officially opened to traffic... This is part of the China's Kunming-Vietnam's Hai Phong Transport Corridor and belongs to the Greater Mekong Subregion ( GMS) cooperation program connecting Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar and China...

TRUCKING INDUSTRY * China: Overloaded trucks

* Beijing - A slightly Overloaded truck in China


-- A slightly overloaded truck, spotted in China on the eastern section of the mighty Fifth Ring Road in Beijing. The truck is transporting construction waste, including all sorts of packaging materials, wooden planks, iron rods, and tin cans of all sorts and sizes. The load stuck out at least half a meter on each side and more than a meter in the air... The mess was held together, barely, by a few flimsy ropes and some duck tape. That black Audi there is moving all the way to the left when passing this dangerous load! Transporting goods in this way is officially very forbidden in China, but in reality nobody cares, and especially not in the hinterlands of the Fifth Ring and further out of town...

-- The challenges are abundant for second-tier suppliers moving west into China’s interior, a massive region rife with cheap labor but lacking necessary infrastructure and reliable transportation... The only way to confront those challenges is to make a clear appraisal of the transportation environment, a panel of logistics experts said at the 15th annual TPM Conference in Long Beach, California... The China's Go West policy, officially known as the Western Development Program, covers the municipality of Chongqing and the provinces of Gansu, Guizhou, Qinghai, Shaanxi, Sichuan and Yunnan and the autonomous regions of Guangxi, Inner Mongolia, Ningxia, Tibet and Xinjiang. The initiative, launched in 2001, is an effort to not only develop China’s long-struggling interior, but also to maintain China’s global manufacturing edge by tapping lower labor costs in the interior... Despite robust government-funded infrastructure investments in the interior, moving goods “can still seem like the Wild West,” Choy said... Two-thirds of the world’s toll roads are in China, where tolls can be as high as $200 per trip. Moreover, 90 percent of all freight is brokered, commonly posted on outdoor chalkboards and often illegally overloaded... But Western manufacturers considering the move west, don’t necessarily know these conditions, Choy said. They know labor is cheap and they have the Chinese government’s support, he said... Sales of trucks and buses declined over the first two quarters of 2014, in a development that analysts blame on commercial vehicle makers’ greater exposure to slower economic growth and stricter emission standards... Sales of commercial vehicles, however, are declining. They fell 3 per cent over the first six months to 2m units, according to CAAM, the leading lobby group for domestic vehicle manufacturers... China is the world’s largest market for trucks, accounting for almost half of global sales of those weighing 14 tonnes or more. About 600,000 heavy-duty trucks were sold in China last year, compared with about 200,000 in the EU... But that is down from an annual sales peak of almost 900,000 in 2011, and some industry observers forecast further decline as Chinese truck operators become more efficient...

(Photo: At this truck stop, shipping containers had been turned into offices for freight brokerages. The brokers working the offices have lined up loads, and the owner-operators at the truck stop can get loads from them. Nearly all of these containers here housed broker offices) 
For starters, this truck stop — deemed a tiny one — had parking spaces for about 400 trucks. According to our tour guides, it’s not uncommon for a Chinese truck stop to hold upwards of 10,000 trucks... And of shocking absence? Fuel islands. I’m not sure if this was out of the ordinary or if Chinese truckers just fuel their rigs elsewhere, but it was quite a departure from norm in the U.S.A., where fuel islands basically anchor most truck stops...

* China’s 24-Million-car market spurs trucking investment: freight 

Tokyo,Japan -Bloomberg News, by Chris Cooper / Kiyotaka Matsuda -April 24, 2014: ... Nippon Yusen K.K., the world’s largest carrier of vehicles by sea, is planning to add more logistics centers for trucks in China as part of a multi-billion yen world-wide expansion... Nippon Yusen transported 1.36 million cars in China in 2013, including some in a venture with Anji, according to figures from the company. The Tokyo-based company will probably boost trucking of vehicles to 5.7 million worldwide in 2016, from 3.7 million last year, and China’s share is around 40 percent... Nippon Yusen may get a boost in plans to expand its trucking business in China from its current customers. Toyota Motor Corp., Nippon Yusen’s biggest customer, is predicting record China sales of 1.1 million units this year and planning further expansion... Nippon Yusen is also expanding into trucking in North America... The company is buying a 30 percent stake in Mexican trucker Consorcio de Servicios Internacionales SA de C.V. for several billion yen, Takaya Soga, a general manager of Nippon Yusen’s auto logistics group, said...

Workers threaten to take blockade to larger ports

Shenzhen,Guangdong,China -The Journal of Commerce Online, by Bill Mongelluzzo -Jun 4, 2010: -- Truckers in South China who are seeking higher earnings reportedly blocked the main road leading to ports in western Shenzhen on Thursday, and threatened to take their protest to larger ports if they are unable to charge higher rates... Thursday’s blockade affected western Shenzhen ports such as Chiwan and Shekou. Those ports are not nearly as busy as ports in the eastern region of South China such as Yantian and Hong Kong... It is uncertain how effective truckers could be in taking their protests to the larger ports because they are not an organized group. There are thousands of independent truckers in China, somewhat analogous to the owner-operators that serve U.S. container ports... In the harbor trucking sector, cargo interests normally pay truckers for their services. Depending upon the terms of shipment, either the Chinese manufacturer or the U.S. importer is responsible for paying the trucking charges...
