TRUCKING MARKET * USA:

* Virginia - Annual US trucking revenue tops $700 billion for first time

-- U.S.A. trucking companies of all types generated a combined $700.4 billion in revenue last year, fueled by economic growth that led to higher freight demand and higher rates... As an industry, trucking broke past the $700 billion revenue mark in the U.S. for the first time, the American Trucking Associations said in a report released May 11... Trucking revenue rose about 3 percent from nearly $682 billion in 2013 and was up 9 percent from $642 billion in 2012, data from ATA American Trucking Trends reports show... Although ATA attributed much of the increase to increased freight volumes, shippers paid higher rates for trucking services across-the-board last year, feeding truck revenue... The ATA report includes both for-hire carriers, largely truckload and less-than-truckload operators, and private truck fleets operated by shippers such as Wal-mart Stores... However, that 83.4 reading indicated capacity at large truckload carriers is still about 17 percent lower than in the fourth quarter of 2006, the pre-recession capacity peak... Trucking has more than recovered the revenue it lost during the recession, but it will take a much stronger economy to bring truck capacity levels back to their previous peak...
