TRUCK HEIGHT DETECTION DEVICE * USA

* Pennsylvania - Device invented by InventHelp client

--- Based in Pittsburgh, Pa., InventHelp is working to submit the L.O.S. to appropriate companies for their consideration... Even the slightest miscalculation on a truck driver's part can cause extensive damage. If a truck collides with a bridge or an overpass, the structure can become damaged beyond repair, the truck would need extensive repair, it would result in the dispatch of police, cause a massive traffic jam and could even result in injury or death... An inventor from Fort Worth, Texas, has invented L.O.S., a device that automatically alerts a driver if the rig or cargo is too tall to fit under an overpass... L.O.S. prevents serious damage to expensive commercial equipment and highway overpasses and ensures that important freight is delivered in a timely manner and without damage... This invention could help keep insurance rates down, which would appeal to trucking companies. With this device, truckers have peace of mind that their route is clear of obstruction...

SAFETY ROADS * USA: Commercial enforcement is different from regular traffic work

* Washington - Yakima inspectors seek to educate truckers, enforce laws

(Photo)
Yakima,WASH,USA -The Yakima Herald-Republic, by Donald W. Meyers -OCTOBER 6, 2014: -- Yakima police Officer Jim Moore sits in his pickup watching traffic exit U.S. Highway 12... A truck pulling two trailers laden with apple bins catches his attention... Stopping the truck, Moore, one of Yakima’s commercial vehicle inspectors, asks driver Sergio Cortez to pull into a nearby parking lot for a weight check and inspection... Forty-five minutes later, after weighing the truck with portable scales, measuring the distance between truck axles and doing some arithmetic, Moore delivers the bad news: The truck’s about 2 tons overweight, and he should take off about four apple bins and rearrange the others to bring the load into balance... Moore said commercial enforcement is different from regular traffic work... For starters, inspectors do not need probable cause to pull over a commercial truck because commercial drivers are required by federal law to submit to inspection at any time... If a truck needs to be weighed, Moore can do it in the field with portable scales that weigh the truck axle by axle, or escort the driver to a public certified weigh station...

CALL 911 * Canada - Virgoe widow battles speeders

Ontario truckers are rolling out a new campaign to stop aggressive driving on the highways

Barrie,ON,Canada -The Barrie Advance, by Janis Ramsay -Sep 11, 2008: -- ... The campaign uses long-haul trucks as moving billboards to ask motorists to call 911 if they see aggressive drivers. Police ask passengers to call 911 with the tip – and preferably a licence plate number. Drivers can call but police hope they pull off to the side of the road before dialing... The idea came from local widow Debbie Virgoe, whose husband David died in a crash June 18, 2007 after his truck was clipped by car racing up the highway... (Photo by Janis Ramsay - Debbie Virgoe, widow of the trucker killed in a street racing crash last year on Highway 400, launched a new campaign to bust aggressive drivers. She was on hand Thursday with OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino to ask people to call 911)

Hidden problems * USA - Trucks can spell disaster

Truckers are under a duty to secure a load before leaving a shipper's premises and to stop within the first 50 miles of the trip to see if the load has shifted and, if so, to make adjustments...

Escondido,CA,USA -The North County Times, by David Nissenberg (San Diego-based attorney) -14 May 2007: -- In late December 2006, a trailer hitch weighing five to six pounds escaped from a truck, bounced up and down on one of San Diego's freeways and smashed into the windshield of a sport utility vehicle, tragically killing its 32-year-old driver. Trailer hitches secure a towed vehicle such as a trailer to a truck and, if properly utilized, will not detach... Members of the driving public have to rely on trucking companies to properly instruct their personnel on safe driving and safe load securement so that unwanted items from a truck or tractor-trailer do not end up flying through the air or lying in wait for some unsuspecting driver to collide with. Reliance, however, can only go so far. Cautious driving and aggressive law enforcement are also needed to cut down on these hidden problems with trucks...
