Since installing the system, Reynolds has benefited from a 61% decrease in the number of collisions, and weekly minor damage costs have decreased by 50%. The company has also reduced their annual insurance costs by over £250,000 and these costs continue to decrease... More than 34 million incidents have been recorded on in-vehicle video cameras by the SmartDrive Safety programme in the UK and USA...

* USA - Next generation Monosteel piston improves truck fuel economy and emissions

Southfield,MICH,USA -Transport Engineer, by Brian Tinham -15 Oct 2010: -- Magnum MonosteelFederal-Mogul's new generation of its Monosteel piston – reduces piston mass by up to 7% and, according to its developer, enables reduced friction for improved fuel economy and emissions... Rainer Jueckstock, Federal-Mogul senior vice president of powertrain energy, says that the design goal has been to meet thermal, mechanical, abrasion and corrosion challenges on heavy-duty diesel engines that result from the emissions regulations. It features, for example, a patented, dual friction-welded construction, which allows large cooling galleries for superior high temperature resistance, while also increasing strength to handle higher cylinder pressures... What's new, however, is the Magnum's 'double-band' piston skirt design – a first for modern diesel pistons that helps to reduce frictional drag and reduces the overall piston skirt area by 40%... Jueckstock says that extensive engine testing has shown piston friction reduction of up to 17%, compared to conventional steel piston designs. He also comments that the double-band skirt also enables better hydrodynamic lubrication, compared to conventional skirt designs... (Image from federalmogul: Monosteel piston C13)

TRUCKS PRODUCTS * USA - Driver/invented device measures overhead room

New York,NY,USA -Fleet Owner -Apr 20, 2010: -- Damage to trailers hitting overhead obstacles can cost fleets thousands of dollars in repairs. And sometimes that damage results in claims against businesses, cities or states that have mislabeled bridges or other obstacles that can tie up an employee’s time as they try to recoup those expenses. But a tractor-trailer driver from New York has come up with a novel solution-- the GiraffeG4 Truck Protection System... The Giraffe, created by Frank Nugent, uses sound wave technology to measure the height of overhead obstacles. The unit is mounted on a mirror and a driver simply inputs the height of his load before he sets out... If the driver suspects a bridge might be too low to safely drive under, he simply pulls his cab under it and waits for the Giraffe to send the accurate height back to the readout in the cab. The sensor will continue to monitor the hazard as the truck passes under... The GiraffeG4 is comprised of a driver programmable readout with LED display for the cab and a sealed sensor unit that attaches easily to an exterior mirror. The unit is waterproof...

TRUCKS' PRODUCTS * The Netherlands - The Cargoshell: ingenious collapsible replacement for the standard shipping container

The Cargoshell was invented by Dutch businessman and entrepreneur René Giesbers

Holland -Gizmag, by Mike Hanlon -January 6, 2010: ... A new collapsible composite container is being trialled which is ingeniously more efficient, lighter, cheaper, more easily trackable, more accountable in terms of its contents and more environmentally-friendly... Comprehending the magnitude of the merchant shipping industry is a difficult task because it is so large – the world’s 50,000 merchant ships account for roughly 5% of global GDP and more than 90% of the non-bulk cargo carried worldwide arrives at its destination in containers. Which is why it makes infinite sense to streamline and optimise the trade transportation process... The concept of a collapsible shipping container now makes particular sense because a large proportion of the containers being shipped into exporting countries each year are empty - 26% of all containers shipped globally each year originate from China for instance, so most of them are returned empty at only slightly less transporting cost than their original journey when full... Similarly, every full container, whether it has been transported by road, train or boat needs to be returned empty at several points in its eventual round-trip and it is this particular aspect of the Cargoshell which offers the greatest benefits. The Cargoshell has the unique ability to collapse inside 30 seconds to one quarter its original size, meaning four empty Cargoshells can be transported together in the space normally required for one empty current container... (Photo: The ingenious Cargoshell - let's hope it is adopted)

New supply deal keeps A123 competitor Valence afloat into 2010

Austin,Texas,USA -Green Beat, by Tom Slater -December 18, 2009: -- The relatively minor deal just struck between Smith Electric Vehicles U.S. and Valence Technology may hold broader promise. The $1.4 million contract to supply the automaker with advanced batteries could be the shot in the arm Valence needs to survive among the likes of A123Systems, Johnson Controls-Saft and Panasonic... Because the two companies designed their products to fit each other, Valence is a virtual lock for future orders, even if the agreement isn’t explicitly exclusive. This puts the venture-backed company in a much better position going into 2010, a year that could be a melee of partnerships and supply deals between electric vehicle and hybrid makers and advanced battery makers... With many EV and hybrid models set to be released next year and 2011, automakers are sure to be looking for battery suppliers with the cheapest, most efficient technology on offer.
