Elyria,OH,USA -Truck News -Jun 13, 2013: -- Bendix is claiming its next-generation commercial vehicle safety system will offer features “never before possible for commercial vehicles in North America ” ... The system is being developed with suppliers including TRW and Mobileye and will be available through truck OEMs... Bendix says it will dramatically enhance features currently available in driver assistance systems, such as collision mitigation... The vision aspect will utilize a TRW camera adapted for use by Bendix and powered by the Mobileye System-on-Chip EyeQ2 processor, which Bendix says offers state-of-the-art algorithms...


* Michigan - Meritor Wabco says study shows collision mitigation systems save lives

Troy,MICH,USA -Truck News (CAN) -Jun 13, 2013: -- Meritor Wabco says a new study validates the life-saving potential of its collision mitigation system... The study, by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) found Meritor Wabco’s OnGuard collision mitigation system would have been able to eliminate 24% of fatalities and 23% of injuries resulting from actual truck crashes analyzed in the study... The study also looked at next-generation collision mitigation systems, and found that fatality reductions using the next version of the system could reduce fatalities by 44% and injuries by 46%... Looking further down the road, “future-generation CMS” could generate an estimated reduction of 57% in fatalities and 56% in injuries, the study found. And if all straight trucks and tractor semi-trailers used the systems, the combined economic savings could total $1.4 billion for current systems, $2.6 billion for next-generation systems and $3.1 for future-generation systems... Also, a comparison between a fleet with and without collision mitigation technology showed fleets without CMS were 2.26 times more likely to be the striking vehicle in a rear-end crash than trucks equipped with collision mitigation systems...

The accident left about 20 people injured) Washington,DC,USA -The Trucker News Services -14 June 2013: -- Forty two percent of the dollar settlements paid by trucking companies to motorists injured in accidents may exceed the federal government’s minimum insurance requirement for trucking companies, according to a study conducted recently by the Alliance for Driver Safety and Security Inc. (Trucking Alliance)... The alliance is a coalition of trucking companies including Maverick Transportation, Knight Transportation, J.B. Hunt, Dupré, Boyle Transportation, Fikes Truck Line and Schneider National... Through MAP-21, the surface transportation bill, Congress has mandated that the Department of Transportation evaluate the adequacy of the $750,000 minimum level of insurance required of motor carriers, an amount that has not been adjusted in more than 30 years, despite inflation and escalating medical costs... To conduct its own study, member companies of the Trucking Alliance voluntarily tracked 8,692 accident settlements between 2005 and 2011... The data shows that if all the trucking companies in the study had maintained the minimum $750,000 insurance requirement, 42.0 percent of their monetary exposure from these settlements would have exceeded their insurance coverage... Additionally, the study showed that of the settlements that exceeded $750,000 of insurance, the uninsured liability exposure ranged from 37.5 percent at the $1 million insurance level down to 17.7 percent at $4 million of insurance coverage...

Visitors to the SmartDrive stand will learn how in-cab video safety systems are proving essential to driver and vehicle safety on the UK’s busy roads. The system makes it easy for companies to improve driving behaviour and eliminate noncompliance and risks such as smoking, eating, using handheld mobile phones and non-use of seatbelts. For example, Reynolds, the company that delivers fresh food to Pret A Manger and Pizza Express, wanted to reduce the collision rate among its 235 drivers. Safety Systems * USA - Benefits Outweigh Costs of

Arlington,VA,USA -Transport Topics -12 March 2009: -- An American Transportation Research Institute study sponsored by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration found that the benefits of three separate onboard safety systems outweigh the costs to motor carriers... The study researched forward collision warning systems, lane departure warning systems and roll stability control systems, and found that for each dollar spent on these systems, the benefit to motor carriers is greater than that... For forward collision warning systems, carriers see $1.33 to $6.55 of savings for each dollar spent, depending on factors such as how many miles each truck drives... For lane departure systems, the benefit is $1.37 to $6.55, and for roll stability control systems, the benefit is $1.66 to $9.36... ATRI considered costs such as labor, property damage, worker's compensation, legal costs and more when analyzing the benefits of the safety systems...

* Canada - Feds looking at technology that will prevent trucks from speeding

Winnipeg,IT,Canada -The Canadian Press -4 Sept 2007: -- Canadian truckers could soon be tied to an electronic leash that would prevent them from driving any faster than 105 km/h, even as cars, vans and smaller vehicles zip by them at higher speeds... The proposal, being examined by the federal and provincial governments, is aimed in part at improving road safety, but one analyst warns it could actually end up making highways more dangerous... Transport Canada is studying how speed limiters will affect road safety and whether they might have economic consequences, such as whether American truckers might avoid Canadian routes. Recommendations are expected next spring and federal and provincial transport ministers could make a decision as early as next fall... The department is also examining the experience in Australia and other countries where speed limiters have been mandated. Studies have shown that roughly one in three limiters had been tampered with, allowing truckers to speed... Most provinces are waiting to see the results of the studies before making any promises like Ontario did... FL,USA -FleetOwner -25 June 2007: -- Florida’s Port Everglades Terminal is the latest port facility looking to upgrade freight security, in this case by adopting General Electric’s CommerceGuard container security device (CSD) system... Richard Rovirosa, CEO & gm of Port Everglades Terminal, said deploying a CSD system helps detect and report intrusion into a container, ensuring the safety of cargo as it travels from point of origin to final destination... He said that’s critical as Port Everglades handles more than 864,000 TEU (20-ft equivalent container units) annually and serves as a major cruise ship destination-- making it a high-traffic location of critical importance to the U.S. maritime economy...

Safety Systems * Sweden - Volvo’s new ones, keep the driver on course

Stockholm,Sweden -Easier (Chester,UK) -13 April 2007: -- Volvo Trucks has a long tradition of pursuing the development of safety systems for heavy trucks. Over the years, the company has achieved a number of pioneering breakthroughs, such as the introduction of the safety cab, the fitting of seat belts as standard, the deformable steering wheel and much more... These developments have contributed to the fact that since 2001, fatal accidents on the European road network have dropped by about 20 per cent, although the EU target is to halve this figure by 2010... One way of reducing risks in traffic is to integrate accident-preventive active safety systems into the vehicles themselves, so coinciding neatly with the EU’s Road Safety Day on April 27th, Volvo Trucks is introducing two such systems, Lane Keeping Support and Adaptive Cruise Control... Lane Keeping Support alerts with precision: Activated at 60 kph, Lane Keeping Support (LKS) is a system which continuously monitors the lane marker lines and alerts the driver with an audible signal if the vehicle is unintentionally about to stray from its lane... Camera in the windscreen: LKS consists of a position sensor (i.e. a camera and accompanying control unit that reads off the road markings) and a computer that registers whether the truck is about to stray from its current lane. The camera is installed at the upper edge of the windscreen, the control unit is fitted in the radio shelf and the computer is located behind the passenger seat... ACC with greater braking force and improved radar function: As well as launching LKS, Volvo is also presenting a new generation of ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control), in which the wheel brakes have now been integrated into the system... Lane Keeping Support will be available on the Volvo FH and FH16, while Adaptive Cruise Control will be available on all Volvo FM, FH and FH16 models with I-Shift... Delivery of both systems will start this autumn...
