TRUCKS' PRODUCT WORLDWIDE * UK - Carrier Transicold launches low fuel sensor

To cut reefer unit breakdowns

London,UK -Transport Engineer (UK), by Brian Tinham -14 Oct 2010: -- Carrier Transicold has introduced a low fuel level sensor for its Vector trailer refrigeration units, to eliminate the number one cause of breakdown call-outs... Scott Dargan, operations director at Carrier Transicold UK, says the unit is designed to help safeguard the integrity of the cold chain, as well as to protect Carrier's temperature controlled systems from running out of fuel... Carrier's new sensor is available as a retrofit option and as original equipment. If the refrigeration unit's fuel level drops below 15% for more than 30 seconds, an alarm is activated to notify the driver. If the fuel level continues to fall and drops below 10 per cent for more than 60 seconds, the system automatically shuts down... (Photo: A Carrier Transicold Technician)

* USA - Next generation Monosteel piston improves truck fuel economy and emissions

Southfield,MICH,USA -Transport Engineer, by Brian Tinham -15 Oct 2010: -- Magnum MonosteelFederal-Mogul's new generation of its Monosteel piston – reduces piston mass by up to 7% and, according to its developer, enables reduced friction for improved fuel economy and emissions... Rainer Jueckstock, Federal-Mogul senior vice president of powertrain energy, says that the design goal has been to meet thermal, mechanical, abrasion and corrosion challenges on heavy-duty diesel engines that result from the emissions regulations. It features, for example, a patented, dual friction-welded construction, which allows large cooling galleries for superior high temperature resistance, while also increasing strength to handle higher cylinder pressures... What's new, however, is the Magnum's 'double-band' piston skirt design – a first for modern diesel pistons that helps to reduce frictional drag and reduces the overall piston skirt area by 40%... Jueckstock says that extensive engine testing has shown piston friction reduction of up to 17%, compared to conventional steel piston designs. He also comments that the double-band skirt also enables better hydrodynamic lubrication, compared to conventional skirt designs... (Image from federalmogul: Monosteel piston C13)

* UK - Alenia Optic has launched a Fresnel lens specifically for vans, smaller trucks, coaches and buses

Southampton,Hampshire,UK -
Transport Engineer, by Brian Tinham
-13 Oct 2010: ... Lee Doughty, general manager of VanView sales at Alenia, explains that, just as with large truck and tractors, there's a mirror blind spot problem with vans and other LCVs... Alenia's R&D team has identified the mirror 'no zone', has now created a lens fix... Doughty is now urging LCV fleet managers and health and safety workers to ensure that they are aware of both the 'no zone' and the low cost, press fit, plastic lens that will help every white van man see vulnerable road users and other obstacles...
