INFRASTRUCTURES * Australia & New Zealand - New Projects target road safety and congestion

The Federal, Queensland and Victorian governments have announced major road projects to improve safety and reduce congestion

Brisbane,Queensland,Australia -Supply Chain Review -October 15, 2010: -- In Queensland, a new multi-million dollar Gateway northbound lane will be built... According to Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister, Anthony Albanese, and Main Roads Minister, Craig Wallace, two lanes will be widened to three on the northbound lane between Sandgate Road and the Deagon Deviation... Each day, this section of road is used by about 65,000 vehicles, with numbers peaking during the afternoon commute, causing delays for motorists... In Victoria, works have started for a new direct freeway link between Kings Road and the Calder Freeway at Taylors Lakes, as part of the first stage of safety improvements along the freeway between Keilor and Diggers Rest... Jointly funded under the Victorian Transport Plan and the Nation Building Program respectively, the $62 million project includes a new freeway interchange and the duplication of Kings Road at Taylors Lakes... The interchange will also help ease congestion in morning and afternoon peaks and allow the nearby Robertsons Road connection to be shut down, eliminating a potential freeway blackspot... * Study: Road network in crisis because of crumbling local roads

Canberra,Australia -ATA Friday Facts -15 Oct 2010: -- The Australian Local Government Association (ALGA) has released the findings of an independent study into the funding needs of Australia’s local roads, which estimates that an additional $1.2 billion will need to be spent each year just to maintain the current standard of the Australian local road network...   The 565 local councils across the country manage 650,000 kilometres of local roads which represent more than 80 per cent of the entire Australian road network...   The study, commissioned by ALGA, examined a sample of 158 councils from across the country and calculated the rate of annual under-expenditure by all councils is $860 million. This will blow out to $1.2 billion if current expenditure settings are not improved...   ALGA President Councillor Geoff Lake said the Australian and state governments are responsible for the decline in Australia’s local roads...   The study also found that while councils have increased rate revenues to meet funding shortfalls, the pressures on councils in other service areas means there is simply not enough available from the local rate-base for roads... * New Zealand - Bypass flaw causes $5m blowout

Waikato,NZ -The Waikato Times, by BELINDA FEEK -16 Oct 2010: -- A design blunder with the roundabouts for Taupo's new multimillion-dollar bypass cost taxpayers an extra $5 million...   Taupo District Council's infrastructure services group manager, Ted Anderson, confirmed "reconstruction" of the roundabouts had cost $9.85 million and pushed the total bill for the roundabouts to about $13.8 million – $5 million over budget...   Work came to a halt in February after trucking industry heavyweights said they would be too small for trucks to negotiate...   New Zealand Transport Agency's state highway manager Kaye Clark said the roundabouts were initially designed in two different sizes; Wairakei was largest at 42m diameter, while Anzac Rd and Crown Rd were 35m...   But, after discussions with the trucking industry and project manager's Taupo District Council it was agreed to make them bigger...
