* New York - Are trucking companies going green?

New York,NY,USA -Triple Pundit, by Chandler Magann -11 Dec 2014: -- According to the United Nation’s Global Corporate Sustainability Report 2013, a good portion of corporations took the initiative to improve sustainability in 20 management practices... However, not all the news is good. Some big-name corporations don’t consider trucking as a long-term, sustainable form of transportation... Despite the initial urge to eliminate trucks altogether, a growing number of businesses are taking an environmentaly responsible approach to trucking and making it part of their sustainable logistics plans. More than 100 companies now have hybrid trucks in their fleets. These companies include Pepsi, Coke, AT&T, UPS, Kraft and several more. Kraft Foods began using diesel-electric hybrid delivery trucks in 2009. The company projects the vehicles will use 30 percent less fuel compared to their traditional diesel-powered counterparts... Walmart has recently redesigned its long-haul trucks, which look a lot different than the ones we know today. The new design is called the Walmart Advanced Vehicle Experience. Currently, it’s a concept truck that will take part in the company’s fleet efficiency program. Here are some unique features:
 * The trailer is made from carbon-fiber, reducing 4,000 pounds of weight. This allows fleets to carry more freight.
* Advanced aerodynamic design (a 20 percent improvement from current models).
* Electronic dashboard with customizable gauges and performance data.
* Next-gen LED lighting that is energy efficient and less prone to damage.

According to the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), humans can mitigate severe natural disasters if we reduce our carbon footprint and slow the process of global warming to a maximum of 2 degrees Celsius...

* Washington - Among the highest says new report

Tumwater,WASH,USA -Workers Compensation -11 Dec 2014: -- Truck drivers have some of the highest rates of workplace injuries in Washington state, according to a new report from the Department of Labor & Industries. Each year, one in every 13 truck drivers has a work-related injury serious enough that they have to miss work for a period of time... The report, Trucking Industry: Examining Injuries for Prevention, includes information to help employers target the hazards their employees are most likely to encounter... The new report covers the years 2006 – 2012 and breaks the data down into six different trucking sectors... Sprains, strains and overexertion accounted for the most trucking-related injuries, with costs exceeding $107 million and resulting in 576,000 lost-work days. About 70 percent of these injuries were to drivers. Many of the injuries occurred while connecting or disconnecting a trailer to the truck or opening stuck trailer doors... Falls were also a leading cause of costly claims involving lost-work days... Key points from the report include:
° There were 52 fatalities among trucking industry employees between 2006 and 2012; most of them were vehicle related. All but one were men.
° Among Washington truck drivers, one in 13 was injured seriously enough that they were unable to work and were compensated for lost-work days, in addition to the costs of medical treatment.
° There were 1.5 million lost-work days for all injuries in Washington's trucking industry during the report's time period.
° For the 33,000 workers employed in the trucking industry each year from 2006 through 2012, there were nearly 7,000 lost-work claims.
° Despite increased regulations on hours of service and other monitoring, trucking continues to be one of the most hazardous industries in the country.

* Report: 2011 In the Rear View Mirror: Contract Rates Follow the Spot Market Up

Hummelstown,PENN,USA -Trans Core Freight Solutions, by Mark Montague -3 Jan 2012: ...  Rates spiked seasonally on the spot market in 2011, followed by steady increases in contract rates...  Contract rate increases landed between those two predictions with a 6.5% increase through November, while spot market rates rose a full 7.4%. Spot market rates rose at an uneven pace throughout the year, especially for vans. In the first quarter, van rates advanced 14% over the year-earlier numbers but the gain slowed to 7.5% in the 2nd quarter. Rate growth further slowed to 2.6% in the 3rd quarter before charging back for a 6% gain in Q4, compared to the same period in 2010...  The Road Ahead: Expect Additional Rate Increases in 2012:   Rates will continue to rise in 2012, as carriers’ costs increase. Contributing factors include prices for fuel, insurance, labor, tires and equipment. If the economy improves, the demand will increase pressure on scarce capacity. If the economy stalls, carriers will park more trucks or exit the market entirely. Either way, expect rates to head up as soon as mid-March...

* California/USA - Legislation would allow unions to organize harbor truck drivers

Washington,DC,USA -The Journal of Commerce Online, by Bill Mongelluzzo -Feb 23, 2011: -- Advocates of the unionization of harbor truck drivers opened a new line of attack with a bill in the California Legislature that would define drayage truck drivers as employees of the companies that arrange for their services... John Perez, speaker of the California Assembly, and Assemblyman Sandre Swanson, chairman of the Labor and Employment Committee, introduced the bill, which must now proceed through the normal legislative process... Labor advocates, led by the Teamsters Union, have lobbied at the local, state and federal levels for changes in laws that restrict the ability of unions to organize independent contractors... Most drayage companies at U.S. ports contract with owner-operators to haul containers. Federal anti-trust law prohibits unions from organizing independent contractors such as owner operators... Labor advocates contend that harbor trucking companies exert sufficient control over the daily work routine of owner operators to constitute an employer-employee relationship, and therefore the drivers can be organized by unions...(Photo from .portofoakland: Drayage truckers at Port of Oakland)

* Maine / Vermont / USA - Heavy trucks return to small roads in Maine

Freeport,MAINE/VT,USA -The Associated Press, by CLARKE CANFIELD -Feb 22, 2011: -- After a one-year hiatus, heavy trucks are again rumbling through small towns across Maine and Vermont...  A pilot project that allowed trucks weighing up to 100,000 pounds onto interstate highways in the two states ended in December, forcing trucks filled with petroleum, gravel, paper products and other heavy loads back onto state roads that pass through residential areas and business districts...  In this tourist shopping town 15 miles north of Portland, an estimated 100 or more of the trucks roll down Main Street each day, passing by the L.L. Bean flagship store, outlets, restaurants and retail spots while shoppers and tourists amble over crosswalks and cars pull in and out of side streets...  The trucks virtually disappeared from downtown during the pilot, but the interstate weight limit was lowered back to 80,000 pounds two months ago...  In Freeport, town engineer Albert Presgraves said truck traffic on Main Street is particularly evident in the summer when pedestrian and vehicular traffic picks up, forcing trucks to stop and go and backing up traffic. He doesn't have accident statistics, but said having huge trucks pass through town seems inherently dangerous...   But opponents maintain that efforts to raise the limits in Maine and Vermont are part of the trucking industry's strategy to lobby for bigger and heavier trucks in all states...(Photo from si.wsj)

* New York/USA - DOT truck inspector arrested for taking bribes

Buffalo,NY,USA -Land Line, by Charlie Morasch -27 Jan 2011: -- Federal prosecutors say a DOT inspector accepted tens of thousands of dollars in bribes from Canadian commercial trucking companies in order to help them avoid and delay truck inspections... According to court documents, in early January the Federal Bureau of Investigation worked with a witness that provided detailed information about the inspector’s activities out of an FMCSA office in Buffalo, NY... The witness, who worked as a safety consultant for commercial trucking companies in Canada, told agents they paid the agent $60,000 to $70,000 during the last two years with cash and Western Union wire payments. The payments were made on behalf of Canadian motor carriers... The money was exchanged for information that included quarterly listings of Canadian trucking companies being targeted for FMCSA inspections; assistance from the DOT inspector in helping the witness obtain work from those companies; “audit sample” information that showed what information FMCSA would review during inspections; the inspector’s help in rescheduling FMCSA inspections and the inspector’s initiation of “complaint audits” to put a company out of business; and “friendly audits” to help a company to obtain a satisfactory rating from FMCSA... TRUCKING MYTHS * USA - Study confirms it's not necessary to 'warm up' diesel engine

Winnipeg,MAN,Canada -Truck News -May 18, 2010: -- A study by FPInnovatrions-Feric in partnership with Bison Transport has confirmed that it's not necessary to idle a diesel engine to warm it up... A series of tests were conducted as part of Project Innovation Transport (PIT), which proved it was more efficient to idle the engine for a short period after a cold start and then to drive the vehicle at moderate load while it warms up to normal operating temperatures... The findings debunk the myth that a diesel engine must first be idled for a lengthy period to bring it up to temperature... The study also tested a coolant energy recovery system and found that it was effective in maintaining cab warmth with the engine turned off. The cabin remained a comfortable 17 degrees C two hours after engine shut-down, with the system turned on... In another test, FPInnovatios measured the effectiveness of Tire Pressure Control Technologies on hard-packed, snow-covered roads. Tom Fischer Logging in Huntsville, Ont. participated in the test... The tests with loaded vehicles showed no significant impact on fuel consumption when the tire pressure was decreased from 100 psi to 75 psi on snow-packed roads...

TRUCKING INDUSTRY OPINION * USA - Driver turnover down, bankruptcies up

The drop in driver turnover and the increase in carrier bankruptcies reflect economic change that began in the second quarter of 2007, according to the American Trucking Associations

USA -eTrucker, by Jill Dunn -17 Oct 2008: -- ... Large truckload driver turnover dropped to 85 percent during the second quarter of this year, the lowest since the first quarter of 1998. Large TL driver turnover, which peaked at 136 percent in the fourth quarters of 2004 and 2005 when freight was strong, was 103 percent in this year’s first quarter. The lowest driver turnover for large TL carriers was 77 percent in the fourth quarter of 1997... The turnover rate refers to employee-only line-haul drivers who leave for whatever reason and rates are annualized for the year. Large truckload carriers are classified as making more than $30 million in annual revenue. Less-than-truckload turnover rates are believed to be lower because of availability of more home time. The LTL turnover rate decreased from a 14 percent annualized rate in the first quarter of this year to 6 percent in the second quarter...

COMMON SENSE * Canada - Trucking industry invaluable

Charging truckers a fee could not possibly result in a win/win situation. Truckers would be the big losers in this scenario

Windsor,ONT,CAN -The Windsor Star (thanks to SUE BRIMNER/Essex) -May 09, 2008: -- ... Truckers are hardworking taxpayers. According to Statistics Canada, trucking is one of the largest occupational groups in the country with workers who put in higher-than-average hours. Adding another expense to an industry that is suffering with soaring fuel costs will cause a large loss of jobs in the economy and contribute to the industry's decline... Mr. Menard writes: "If the trucking industry balks, let it go elsewhere." (See "Charge Truckers A Fee And Bring In Jobs, Money" -May 1, by Dennis Menard)... Canada is the seventh-largest trading nation in the world with exports in excess of 40 per cent. More than 40 per cent of all goods produced in Canada are exported... The United States, our largest trading partner, receives approximately 75 per cent of our exports. The most economical and timely manner of transporting these goods is by truck. Almost everything used in day-to-day life, or a component of it, has been transported by truck... If we send the trucking industry away from the busiest border crossing in North America, how would we ship the goods we manufacture here?...
