* Report: 2011 In the Rear View Mirror: Contract Rates Follow the Spot Market Up

Hummelstown,PENN,USA -Trans Core Freight Solutions, by Mark Montague -3 Jan 2012: ...  Rates spiked seasonally on the spot market in 2011, followed by steady increases in contract rates...  Contract rate increases landed between those two predictions with a 6.5% increase through November, while spot market rates rose a full 7.4%. Spot market rates rose at an uneven pace throughout the year, especially for vans. In the first quarter, van rates advanced 14% over the year-earlier numbers but the gain slowed to 7.5% in the 2nd quarter. Rate growth further slowed to 2.6% in the 3rd quarter before charging back for a 6% gain in Q4, compared to the same period in 2010...  The Road Ahead: Expect Additional Rate Increases in 2012:   Rates will continue to rise in 2012, as carriers’ costs increase. Contributing factors include prices for fuel, insurance, labor, tires and equipment. If the economy improves, the demand will increase pressure on scarce capacity. If the economy stalls, carriers will park more trucks or exit the market entirely. Either way, expect rates to head up as soon as mid-March...

REPORTS * USA - Is the Bloom Off California’s Rose? Some Say Yes.

US Gulf, East Coast ports vie to attract container cargo and business from the once-Golden State

Los Angeles,CAL,USA -CalTrade Report –4 Dec 2008: -- The continuing global economic crisis, dreary retail sales, and increased efforts by US Gulf and East Coast ports to attract container cargo are severely impacting the volume of goods moving through California’s deep-water container ports, according to the monthly Port Tracker report released this week by the National Retail Federation (NRF)... Overall, nationally cargo volume at the nation’s major retail container ports is expected to decline 6.5% in 2008 compared with 2007 as merchants carefully manage inventories in response to the nation’s slow economy... Container cargo volumes moving through the West Coast ports fell again in October, and 2008 is now expected to be the slowest year since 2004, the report said. Import and export container volume moving through the Port of Los Angeles, the nation's busiest box port, was off 3.9% for the 12-month period ending in October, while the Port of Long Beach, the nation's second ranked port, was down 7.7% during the same period... REPORT: Trucking outlook * USA - Negative across the board

USA -Fleet Owner, by Justin Carreta -Oct 1, 2008: -- Freight demand may not increase until 2010, truck and trailer orders are down and the economy doesn’t look to be rebounding anytime in the near future, according to FTR Associates’ North American Commercial Truck and Trailer Outlook Report... “The freight environment can still be described as weak,” the report said. “With housing in a steep recession, the auto markets in a sharp downturn and consumers under severe stress, there are very few commodities where aggregate demand is holding up. Exports continue to support economic growth but much of this freight is not handled by truck”... The report noted that many fleets have reported their freight demand has fallen substantially in the past six weeks, adding to concern that it will not rebound in the second half of 2009 as originally hoped but stay slow until 2010... Orders remain weak, with trailers and medium-duty truck sales plummeting over the past several months and Class 8 demand declining, albeit at a smaller rate, FTR said, adding that there will be far less of a “pre-buy” ahead of EPA 2010 than there was in 2007...
