* Werner Q2 profit falls 30 pct
Omaha,NE,USA -Reuters -Jul 20, 2009: -- Werner Enterprises Inc., a trucking and logistics company, posted a 30 percent drop in quarterly profit, hurt by lower revenue from its trucking and value added services segments... For the second quarter, net income was $12.7 million, or 18 cents a share, compared with $18.1 million, or 25 cents a share, a year ago... Revenue fell 30 percent to $403.1 million...

* Truckload Fleets Slash Driver Pay to Trim Expenses
Washington,DC,USA -Transport Topics, by Rip Watson -20 July 2009: -- About one-third of truckload fleets have cut driver pay over the past 12 months as carriers strive to trim expenses during the extended freight recession, a new survey has reported... The average pay reduction was about 2.6 cents a mile, or 7%, for drivers with three years’ experience when they start work at a new carrier, according to the latest National Transportation Institute survey, released July 13... The quarterly survey continued a pattern of driver pay cuts that first began as early as 2007, when freight tonnage growth began to flag. Driver pay cuts since then have totaled 9.4%... Trucking industry employment has been falling for the past 14 months, federal statistics show, and truck tonnage has dropped more than 10% since early last year, the latest time industry employment increased...
* Nevada laws make several changes to truck rules
Reno,Nevada,USA -Land Line Magazine -July 20, 2009: -- Several new laws on the books in Nevada are of note to the trucking industry. Among them are changes to trip permits, vehicle depreciation, and size and weight checks... As of July 1, commercial vehicles with a combined gross vehicle weight rating of 10,001 pounds or greater not registered in Nevada must obtain a 24-hour temporary trip permit before entering the state. Previously, vehicles could travel to the nearest available vendor to purchase permits... Trucks registered through the International Registration Plan and apportioned to travel in Nevada do not need to purchase a permit... Also included in the law are provisions for administrative fines. Those fines are to be handed out in addition to any applicable criminal penalties, if a vehicle or combination of vehicles is determined to weigh greater than its registered weight... Vehicles cited must be reregistered at their maximum weight, as specified by the vehicle’s manufacturer...
