* DC - Trucking adds 1,500 jobs in January

-- Trucking added 1,500 jobs in January, and the unemployment rate dropped to 4.9%, an almost eight-year low, the Labor Department reported Feb. 5. The transportation and warehousing sector, which includes trucking, lost 20,500 positions, as the courier and messenger job sector lost 14,500 jobs. The jobless rate fell to the lowest level since February 2008. TRUCKING EMPLOYEMENT * USA: Rose for 5th. month in August

* DC - US trucking employment hits new peak, but hiring slows

-- U.S. trucking employment rose for the fifth straight month in August, but at a slower pace, as the hiring crunch that slowed employment growth across the U.S.A. economy squeezed the industry. The more than 100,000 motor carriers tracked by the Bureau of Labor Statistics added only 700 jobs in August from July, according to preliminary BLS data. In the previous four months, the agency’s data show trucking firms hired 2,600; 7,900; 5,300 and 3,400 employees, respectively. In total, the for-hire carriers had 1.46 million employees on their payrolls in August. That surge in trucking employment pushed the industry past its pre-recession employment peak of early 2007 and kept the JOC.com For-Hire Trucking Employment Index at 100.8 in August, it’s highest ever. The revised index hit 100.8 in July after rising above 100 in May. The U.S.A. economy added 173,000 jobs in August, fewer than economists expected and well below the 12-month trailing average of 247,000 per month. However, the national unemployment rate dropped to 5.1 percent, the lowest rate since April 2008. As far as the Federal Reserve Bank is concerned, that rate is in the range representing “full employment.” Currently, trucking and intermodal companies and shippers say truck capacity is relatively readily available. That could change quickly if freight demand is strong this fall, as carriers can only add capacity to meet shipper demand when they can hire additional drivers...

VETERANS TRUCKERS * USA: Who better than veterans to fill trucking's empty ranks?

* Michigan - Trucking companies stepping up efforts to attract, retain veterans

... When it comes to it, a job like driving a heavy-duty truck on U.S. roadways is different than many you'll find in the civilian sector — it's more regulated and structured, for instance, and involves operating more serious hardware than many potential new hires would be comfortable doing. Military veterans' experience often gives them an edge in being successful in that role and other trucking industry positions, says Jason Schenkel, who recently joined southeastern U.S. motor carrier Holland as a hiring manager... He should know. Before this, Schenkel spent 16 of his 23 years of active duty in the Army as a professional recruiter helping find young men and women who would serve and someday become part of that veteran population... Schenkel says veterans have an advantage in that their families are more used to — and often are even built around — schedules that include such away time, and likely for longer periods than a job in trucking would involve. Sometimes, he says, military families can have a harder time adjusting from active duty life to a more conventional 9-to-5 civilian job... "For a truck driver, can your family operate and do what they have to do when you're gone? Most military families do not have issues doing that," Schenkel says. "So veterans probably have a better opportunity to adapt to the environment, be successful at it and come onboard a lot faster than most new hires would" ...

TRUCKING JOBS * USA: Loses 6,800 jobs

* DC - March was the first month since June 2013 the industry has failed to post a gain

--  The weakening U.S.A.  economy spilled into the job market in March. Overall, employers added only 126,000 jobs — the fewest since December 2013 — snapping a streak of 12 straight months of gains above 200,000... But what gain there was didn’t extend into-hire trucking lost, which lost 6,800 jobs. It was the first time since June 2013 the industry has failed to post a gain, and that month the for-hire trucking market was flat from the previous month, when the industry lost 800 jobs... The Labor Department said Friday that the U.S.A. unemployment rate remained at 5.5 percent...

TRUCKING INDUSTRY * USA - Freight Jobs Grow in Weak Employment Market

* DC - Broader numbers show poor job growth may drag down consumer spending

Washington,DC,USA -The Journal of Commerce Online, by Joseph Bonney -Jun 4, 2010: -- Transportation hiring inched up in May as overall weakness in private job creation was offset by a surge in temporary government employment of census workers... Seasonally adjusted estimates in the Labor Department’s monthly employment report showed trucking employment in May totaled 1,231,100, a net increase of 2,000 jobs from April... Employment in support activities for transportation increased by 2,800 to 543,400, while warehousing and storage jobs increased 2,100 to 645,800. Couriers and messengers showed a net loss of 2,700 jobs, to 497,400... (Photo from lbhr: Transportation jobs)

* Florida - Trucking industry picking up, but few new jobs available - “Prices are up 30 to 40 percent and you still can’t find a truck,” said Rob Hooper Jr., Atlantic Logistics Inc.

Jacksonville,FL,USA -The Jacksonville Business Journal, by Mark Szakonyi -June 5, 2010: ... The unexpected upswing in trucking orders, up nearly 300 percent last month from April 2009, trucking customers are spending more on transportation and will likely pass those increased costs onto the buyers of everything from produce to electronics... One customer wanted eight trucks to move goods from the Savannah, Ga., area to Richmond, Va., in two days, but Hooper said the best he could find the customer was two to three trucks per day... Tom Nightingale, spokesman and chief marketing officer for Con-way Freight, said, even when trucking companies want to add new drivers, it will be tricky, he said. The country’s aging demographic, along with the job’s long hours and nights away from home, hinders recruiting... Considering truckers face at least $1,000 worth of tag fees and taxes and a truck with about 500,000 miles costs about $19,000, potential drivers will find it difficult to afford to get on the road, said Bonnie Logue, president of Open Freight Inc... (Photo by James Crichlow - The recent increase in trucking orders is allowing the industry to shift prices in its favor, for the first time in about two years)

* DC - Hourly driver pay remains rare

Washington,DC,USA -eTrucker, by Jill Dunn -4 June 2010: -- U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill recommended researching hourly pay’s effect on trucker safety at an April 28 Senate hearing on motor carrier safety... Pay by the mile or load is the norm for long-haul drivers, although companies may pay hourly for certain conditions, such as detention time or loading. While they did not examine the merits of hourly pay, the Federal Highway Administration and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration completed research on the relationship between driver compensation and safety in 2002... “Higher pay produces superior safety performance for firms and for drivers,” the study concluded... In recent years, Louisiana-based Dupré Logistics began hourly pay for its nearly 800 company drivers... (Photo from truckinginfo, by CharonThumbnailer: Dupre's Back of Truck)

Transport Jobs * USA - Shrink in February.

All freight modes fell faster than normal winter pace

Washington,DC,USA -The Journal of Commerce Online, by John D. Boyd -Mar 5, 2010: ... Despite signs of a slowly improving economy, employment in the transportation modes that include freight operations slid further in February, the Labor Department reported... That extends an almost steady downtrend in transport industries since the recession hit hardest starting in late 2008. In recent months several transportation modes have reported gains in traffic levels as they pull out of their downturn, but that has yet to lift their employment... Based on preliminary reports from companies, Labor said trucking shed another 8,200 jobs last month to bring the sector’s workforce to 1.194 million.... That is the raw employment data, not adjusted for historical seasonal variations; economists say last year’s plunging economic activity would skew the seasonal formulas for some time. Still, February’s trucking decline outpaced Labor’s formula expectations, so that even the adjusted employment level shrunk... BC,CAN -CBC news -March 13, 2009: -- B.C.'s unemployment rate rose more than half a percentage point in February, hitting 6.7 per cent, as an estimated 14,000 people joined the ranks of the jobless... Paul Landry, the president of the B.C. Trucking Association, said jobs are being lost in that industry as freight volumes fall, and predicted more people will become unemployed as companies begin to shut down... The job section of the association's website has only two job postings for truckers at the moment and Landry predicts some of the smaller players in the trucking industry will disappear due to a lack of work...

TRUCKING INDUSTRY JOBS * USA

* 5 jobs in trucking. With freight hauling so crucial to U.S. commerce, these positions are highly sought-after in the industry

Indianapolis,IND,USA -The Indy Star, by Jill Phillips -August 22, 2007: -- In the early 1980s, country music group Alabama recorded "Roll On (Eighteen Wheeler)" as a tribute to truck drivers. Today, trucking companies need more drivers just to keep the industry rolling smoothly... "There's not enough trucks to handle the demand to move freight, and the pool of drivers to choose from isn't as big as it has been," said Andy Card of Perkins Specialized Transportation and chairman- elect of the Indiana Motor Truck Association... It takes more than just drivers and trucks to keep the cargo moving, though. The dispatcher, mechanic, load planner and recruiter are vital to a driver's success...
